I am a sophomore in NC and it's almost time to start choosing classes for junior year. My particular question is that, which class would look better, an AP class or a non honors/AP class, like Health Science with which I could join HOSA and become an officer. So, which would look better on a college app, particularly UNC Chapel Hill's app? An AP class or a standard Health Science class so that I can join HOSA and hopefully become the VP.

I think a strong leadership position might carry more than another AP, but it’s good to get at least 1-2 AP’s in junior year.

Most schools don’t care what ECs you have. Thus, pushing yourself academically usually has lasting benefits vs. some line on your resume. Not saying to not do ECs – but as a strategy for eventual college – I think this one isn’t so WOW to your eventual application readers.

What sorts of colleges are you planning on targeting?

@uruana In junior year I am going to take 3 APs, Will this be enough or should I not take Health Science and take one more AP?

@T26E4 Well I want to get into UNC Chapel Hill (I am instate) and I have heard that they give ECs a lot of importance. I am also going to take 3 APs my junior year, so should I take Health Science and 3 APs or no Health Science and 4 APs junior year? (btw we have a 4 by 4 block schedule.

3 APs junior year is generally sufficiently rigorous for instate admission. Make this decision based on what interests you and what you feel will be the best experience for you, rather than on the basis of how college is likely to perceive your application. Four APs would be a heavy load. If you think it could be difficult to keep up your GPA, it may be better to limit yourself to 3 APS.

Are you really interested in joining HOSA?

@niceday Okay thanks, All the rest of my classes will be honors next year so I think I’ll be okay

@Hunt It would be nice if I could join HOSA and take 4 AP classes but I can’t do everything right? But HOSA seems interesting, I would like to join. If I can I might self study an AP class, but I don’t know how to do that.

UNC Chapel Hill’s admission officers were recently quoted as saying something along the lines of after 5 AP’s, college success is no longer different - i.e. kid with 6 AP’s will do just as well as the one with 14 (Check the UNC Forum to get the article). Because of this, they look at AP’s as nice indicators of course strength, but at a certain point, you don’t NEED to take an AP just to show your schedule is rigorous.

If you will have 5 or more AP’s by the end of senior year without this one AP you’re considering, I’d advise you to take the health class and join HOSA, which truly shows your interests.

@FightTheTide I’ll look for that article, thanks. And by senior year, I will have 8 or 9 APs even if I don’t take this AP class. Thanks for your help! :)
