Which is a better college for an English major: Rutger's New Brunswick or Montclair State?

Like the title of this thread says, I want to know which college is better for an English major. I want to be an English teacher (for middle or high school students). Which school has the best teaching program in NJ? Thanks! (:

Montclair State was a dedicated teacher’s college, and so it might offer more specialized training, but Rutgers probably has the better department overall. You might add TCNJ to your list, also.

Rutgers has far fewer adjuct English professors, a more comprehensive department, and a much stronger student body (important when considering how professors will calibrate their expectations). I would choose Rutgers in a heartbeat if it’s financially do-able

This is a no brainer: Rutgers has a superb English department. Its professors are top notch, and its English majors go to Rutgers to get those profs and the quality education they offer. I’m an English prof and I took a grad course there once. Outstanding professor, but a relative nobody compared to the rest of them.

I know a couple profs at Montclair and they appear to be good teachers (based on long conversations and multiple meetings), but they aren’t doing the kind of research that’s getting done at Rutgers and may not, given their teaching loads, have the time to pursue it.

Rutgers, absolutely. And TCNJ before Montclair, too.
