Which is a better common app essay topic? Less overused?

I am currently writing my common app essay, and I have developed two separate drafts for two ideas. Both of them still need a lot of work, but before moving forward I want to make sure I'm going in the right direction.

The first one is about a lot of my character flaws that I realized and how I have grown after admitting to them. The second is about the struggle I faced growing up between an American society and my ethnic background. I talk about how I felt like I didn't belong to either culture but how I've come to realize that I can benefit from both and that my situation is actually good.

Which do you guys think is better for a common app essay? Which is less cliche/overused? Thanks!

The latter is probably your best bet. As far as which is less overused/cliche, the former is very common (people talk about recognizing their flaws all the time), and the latter is also pretty popular among applicants with ethnic backgrounds (I myself almost wrote something similar).

However, the second topic sounds like it would reveal more about you than the first, as well as make for a more compelling essay.
