I have 2 years to improve my CR from a 560 to 750. Which magazine should I subscribe to? I dont read novels, so this way I might as well read something.

Personally, I enjoy the New Yorker. The New York Times op-ed is also excellent, however, with the new TimeSelect, it costs money to view.

Reading is not the key to improving CR, The Official SAT Study Guide (AKA Blue Book) is.

Studying vocabulary can also help, but with the elimination of analogies and the fairly easy words in sentence completion, that isn't even required for improvement.

However, reading higher level material helps reading comp, and introduces you to different material/points of view -- both important concepts that help you beyond the SAT.

The economist

I second the Economist. Expensive, but so, so worth it.

I third the Economist. Also another great newspaper is the Financial Times. I also agree with the New Yorker.

You know, all the pubs mentioned are good ones. But if you had to pick among the ones mentioned, I'd say the New Yorker. Understand that this is personal preference, but here's why I think the NYer: It has sophisticated humor; great current events and concepts (think: Sy Hersh and Abu Ghraib scandal); fiction; poetry--and yes!--cartoons! It's such a well rounded read.

Two others that come to mind are The Atlantic and/or HArper's. But for all the reasons mentioned above, it's tough to beat the New Yorker.

Wall Street bores me at times...

I like TIme, NEwsweek, Scientific American

The New Yorker......great variety and the cartoon and covers will keep you picking it up week after week. I have recommended for improvement of CR before and now again. The best best to keep you improving.

If you're interested in science, I like Discover magazine. It has a lot of interesting articles without getting into all the technical details and minutia of SciAm (I get both.)

how about playboy, penthouse, hustler?

i would suggest the works of postmodern thinkers (ie Foucault, Agamben, Hardt and Negri, etc). If you can understand the complex messages and discern the difference between various things that the author points out, you'll do very well.

New York Times isn't too bad

read all of them

Foucault + Agamben = The ****.

Sorry, I am a debater.
The Econ is good

The SAT really likes passages about the accomplishments of women and minorities. I think they do this because some have accused them of making a racist and sexist test. I would suggest reading books about African Americans, Native Americans etc.

How exactly does that help one develop critical reading skills?

I suggest War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy.

Just read the New Yorker. A lot of the times they write about college admissions, so bonus! Read the Atlantic as well, again articles about college. And the Economist, if you read it enough you'll start to write in that style...

To develop CR skills, just do lots of practice papers. Lots and lots of them.
