I was just wondering which magazines are best to improve reading skill for the SAT, especially for CR. I was thinking along the lines of The New Yorker, Harper's, The Economist, Scientific American...Are there any more magazines "of merit"? Which ones do you read? Thanks!

Read the magazines that the stereotypically "informed" people read. And by informed, I don't mean informed about Brittney Spears!

Read magazines worth reading. The purpose of reading the magazines is simply to get better at reading. I don't think there's a correlation between how many magazine articles you read and how many more SAT points you get. That's not the way it works. Read magazines because it's good to know about the world and because you will be developing reading skills and because you'll learn a few new words, and you'll (to your surprise) actually see SAT words in national magazines.

Yeah, those magazines are all fine. Read magazines that you're interested in. I like Time. If you do read that, read the article on how people are proposing to raise teachers' wages. I thought that's interesting, and it does have some relevance to college admissions, when you think about it.

I read the New York Times. Everyone should.

thank you sir, this should help all of us!

Time, Newsweek, Fortune.

read magazines you like. i have a scientific american subscription and i almost never read it because it bores me, except for the neuroscience articles. i way prefer scientific american: mind, which is psychology/neuroscience focused.

also, national geographic is incredible.

Read something you're actually willing to read. Reader's Digest will work, or Outside, or Wired.

The Economist writes at a level higher than Star Ledger, New York Times, and Times.
Read it

Atlantic Monthly. Very good writing.

the economist is the best in my opinion. sometimes it feels as if the SAT passages come straight from the articles in that magazine...

Economist, New Yorker, New York Times, Atlantic Monthly, National Geographic, Us Weekly (just kidding!).

Really, all these magazines are quality publications (except for Us Weekly) and it's definitely up to personal preferences.

i strongly recommend Scientific American, if you can understand the articles in that magazine, you will be fine, say, at least a 680 on CR. I am not kidding at all, when you read it, underline and circle the key words, read it at least 2 times. Train yourself like that, you will score a 700+

Stop reading magazines and start reading books where you need a dictionary by your side - then actually look up the words in the dictionary.

Chaucer will teach you a lot of good olde English words.
Moby Dick will teach you a lot of nautical words.
You get the idea.
