Oh, and if you think "the tree" is a bad mascot, according to wikipedia the mascot of Harvard is "John Harvard."

Although I have to agree, "Engineers" is a terrible, terrible name for an athletic team. :p

Enough with this ad hominem stuff; the question was: which school is better known?

I would say its close and UCB would win internationally

Locally (within California): Stanford > Berkeley
Nation-wide: Stanford > Berkeley
Internationally: Stanford > Berkeley

n'uff said.

You don't know what you're talking about... "n'uff said". Berkeley beats Stanford internationally.

not true man. Even if it did, it wouldn't be because of prestige. More ppl have heard of NYU than yale but does that make it better?

Stanford >>>>>>>>> Cal and readers don't let these biased cal kids convince anyone otherwise.

Exactly. The thread was about which was more well-known. Berkeley is probably NOT better than Stanford, but def. more famous overseas.

I think Berkeley’s national & global fame is coming from two different, but related sources.

1) Academics prowess, its fantastic graduate programs at the PhD level and the first-rate research output known all over the world
2) Bastion of Liberalism and its ever-lasting effect that has changed college’s culture once and for all (Party Hard, Study Hard)

When I think of Berkeley outside the academics, I think of all those freedom fighters and their moral supporters, including:

Crosby Still Nash & Young
Greatful Dead
Jefferson Airplane/Starships

& the valkyries,

Joan Baez
Joni Mitchell

. . .

i meant, more people will recognize NYU's name but that doesn't make it a better school than Yale and Dartmouth. 90% of the people my friend talks to have never heard of Dartmouth but almost all of 'em (they live in NY) has heard of NYU.

ROFL! Just ROFL!

Quick, everybody run outside of your house/office and ask the first person you see which is more famous, Stanford or Berkeley. Then report your findings here by Midnight Eastern time, so we can put an end to this madness.

I'll be first. I just asked a homeless guy at a bus stop and he said "Stanford's more famous. Though the grad programs at Berkeley are kick butt."

ok when you people say "interntionally". are you guys talking Europe or Asia?

I dunno about Europe's, but in view from Asia, both the Stanford and Berkeley are well known. But in terms of what people think is the "better" school, Stanford definitely wins. This is NOT my point of view, this is p-o-v from the foreign people's point of view.

heck, some people even think Stanford is an Ivy League school!

Uh, isn't internationally suppoesd to mean all nations, unless otherwise noted?
