I really want to get either a macbook air/pro, but are there any downsides to using Mac?
Also is the pro more preferable?

Use whatever computer you’re most comfortable with. You’ll be doing most of your work either directly in the CSIF or by remotely logging in to those computers anyway.
Literally anything…if you can put linux on it, you can program on it
