Which Major, Econ vs. Engineering?

Hi all, I am thinking about attending UCLA next year and I am accepted to its Econ major. While personal passion is more towards engineering and science-related majors (I don’t hate econ, though. I actually think it’s quite interesting), I am not sure if I want to change my major after my first year. (I am sure I will have no problem fulfilling the requirements).

As I talked to my parents like many times before, they told me to be involved in econ since it gives me a brighter future while, according to them, engineers are relatively inflexible later on in career. They say that older engineers will essentially become “workers” for others… I searched online and it seems true that Econ majors have more advancement opportunities. Since both Engineering and Econ at UCLA are awesome programs and I personally like them both, I am kind of vacillating between these two majors. What is the most logical decision to make in this case considering the two majors’ future development?

Thanks for you response! Any suggestion will be appreciated.

You know you have to get at least a 3.5 in required math and science courses to switch to Engineering, right?
