Basically, my long-term goal is to open up a small boutique in the future. I was thinking about majoring in accounting, so that I'd be able to have a solid job to fall back on and a good way to save money until I am ready to open a business. My question is, will an accounting degree offer enough background on business that I'd have the knowledge I need to open one? Or is there another major more suitable, or perhaps, is a liberal arts college a bad fit for these kinds of goals?

If you are looking to enhance your entrepreneurial skills, an economics-accounting major with a sequence in leadership or financial economics would be very appropriate for you. At CMC, you can’t just major in accounting, the major is much broader than that. It will include the prerequisite economic courses all economics majors must take, in addition to the many accounting courses offered at CMC. I always tell aspiring business owners or administrators that accounting is one of the best courses you can take. To understand a financial statement or to be able to assess the health of a company should not be taken for granted. The numbers are the lifeblood of a business, and someone involved in business who doesn’t have a solid understanding of its finances will never realize their full potential.

The great thing about CMC is that if offers much more than accounting, You will have the opportunity to take courses like entrepreneurial ventures, corporate finance and a host of other leadership/management and finance courses. You will learn how to valuate a company as if you’re an investment banker or step in the shoes of an portfolio manager to analyze a stock. CMC combines the best characteristics of a liberal arts school and a professional business school. Unlike economics programs at other schools, particularly liberal arts schools, you will receive a broad economics and business education, preparing you for a career after graduation.

Just want to tell you the professors in the accounting program are amazing. Professor Massoud, the chair of the program, is an institution at the school. If you are lucky enough to have him as your adviser or teacher, there is nothing he will not do to guide you and help you to master the subject and to ensure that you will have great internships and a great place to work after graduation. The other professors are also outstanding, mainly because Prof Massoud insists on hiring only great professors who care about their students. In this program, you will receive an enormous amount of attention, because Prof Massoud and the other professors are truly concerned about the welfare of their students. I hope this answers some of your questions.
