Which Major in the MCB Department?

Hello!

I was accepted into Letters and Science for Fall 2009 and I would like to study MCB as I will be a pre-med student. Does anyone know which major (out of the 5) in the Molecular and Cell Biology department is the strongest at Cal?
After reading general descriptions of the 5 divisions, I think neurobiology interests me the most. How competitive is neurobiology at Cal? Is Berkeley's neurobiology divison outstanding compared to other UCs (UCLA or UCSD)?

Thank you.

MCB very competitive.

Time for my public service announcement; this is not directed any person in particular

MCB is the hardest bio major not including Chemical Biology. Doing MCB does not help at getting into medical school than any other major. Medical schools don’t give a flying **** what your major is.

If you genuinely like MCB, major in it.
If you think you need to be MCB to be premed, you are horribly wrong. MCB has a good chance of crushing your GPA. Not good for medical school
If you are doing MCB because you ‘just want to be a biology major’, reconsider your actions. There are plenty of biology majors and if you just like biology in general, there is no real reason for you to specifically be MCB

Average departmental GPAs from CampusBuddy

IB is 3.34
BioE is 3.51
EPS is 3.50
ESPM is 3.45
ES is 3.39
PMB is 3.28
Public Health is 3.62
NST is 3.37

MCB is 2.96

thank you for the replies, that is 2.96 GPA is just WOW… GG med school.
Can you recommend some biology majors not under MCB department???

Look at biology.berkeley.edu for more biology majors

Is neurobiology a hard major?

There are no hard majors, it all depends on your ability to work hard and your understanding of your materials. For certain majors that are hard to some may be easy to others. If you work hard and understand the materials in class, then it will be a easy major for you. But if you slack off and don’t understand anything, it’ll be hard.
