So I’m going to a senior in high school and I want to either be a pre-dental or pre-pharmacy major and I am stuck between several majors.
I am currently considering the following majors: Biomedical Sciences, Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Criminology, Criminalistics, Forensics, and Forensic Chemistry.
I know those are a lot of majors but these are all areas that have always interested in, but I want one that also has good job prospects after graduating just in case dental school or pharmacy school does not work out.
Being “pre” anything entails meeting the prereqs for the professional school of your choice. For dental/pharm these prereqs typically include gen chem, ochem, physics, calc, statistics, bio, biochem, genetics, possibly achem and/or pchem, anatomy/phys, psychology, among others. Typically the easiest way to fulfill these is to be a bio major or chem major of some sort. Also keep in mind that you’re “pre” whatever now, but that might change. Try to pick a major that will allow you to easily find a job after college. I know that criminology/criminalists/forensics are popular majors because they are interesting, but unless you want to go on to law or be a police officer they can be challenging to find a job in.
Also, to prepare yourself for the difficulty level of science classes in college, I highly recommend taking AP science and math classes. Even if you don’t take the AP exam they will give you a solid foundation for when you take a similar class in college.
If anyone wanted to know my stats, here they are:
Unweighted GPA: 3.66
Weighted GPA: 4.19
ACT: 26
Class Rank: 27 out of 379
