Which of the elite universities

I am an international student requiring no financial aid . Being an international student it is difficult for my fellow CCer's to help me out with my Queries . But i have found a way : -

My stats :-
I am currently in a Indian CBSE curriculum school - The only thing that matters for admission in the United states for me is My grade 10 Board exam results and grade 12 predicted grades for my board exam .

Grade 10 Board exam :-
Science - A+
Maths - B+
English - B
Social Science - B+
Hindi - A

My schedule for grade 12 exams is :-
Physics
Chemistry
Economics
Maths
English

I have taken the most rigorous courses available in my school .

My SAT score - 2030 - 700M 700CR 630CW

E.C.'s- I am the Writer/actor/producer/director of a movie that i have made on soccer . It includes around 40 students i picked from my school. ( my school Prinipal is a fan)

I am the vice - captain of my school team - soccer

I have worked as a repair/technician at an IT company (fixing computers , assistant , Repair guy, paid well)

Sales promoter at the GITEX Technology Week 2007,2008

I had setup a workshop in my garage in my summer holidays - i fixed cars , radio sets , TV's etc

'I plan to do an Undergrad degree in mechanical engineering .

I have kind of figured out my reaches and matches , but i want to apply to atleast 2-3 elite universities , But i dont want those 2-3 universities to be impossible 1's . I donot require financial aid ! . Can some one tell me which 1's from the following i should be considering (If there is some other university please suggest)

Super Reaches :-
1)CMU
2)Stanford
3)MIT
4)Caltech
5)Harvey Mudd
6)Bucknell
7)Cornell
8)Berkley
9)Rice
10)John Hopkins
11)Duke
12)Northwestern
13)Princeton

U can also suggest a good safety and a match for me .

Thank you

Apply to some of these for matches and safety.

University of Illinois
University of Michigan
Georgia Institute of Technology
Purdue
Penn State
University of Texas
UCLA
Ohio State

Scores seems a bit low; bring that math up. EC is average or above average at best for an international student.

Pick a few reaches that you really like and hope for the best. Imo, chances are not that good at some of these schools espicially for engineering.

Ucla def not a match or safety

I agree with Skateboarder … but I feel even with terrance tao … and very good admission stats … UCLA’s Engineering ain’t great . It has better majors . What about super reaches . which 1 would be the easier 1 for me . I personally love Stanford and Harvey Mudd

Sry if I implied all of those schools are matches or safeties. They are just some choices.

lol …No problemo nooobcake … thanks for helping me out . can you please rank the above super reaches in order of selectivity for an international requiring no financial aid ? . Thanks

Is say you have a good chance at bucknell

B U M P

I was also considering to do something different in my EC’s , i was planning to take up a job as a delivery boy in a near by grocery ( or even a cashier ! :D) … is it advisable to do this ?

So super reaches so far -
bucknell …

any more from from the above at which i may have a decent chance … what about HMC for me … do u people think i might have a chance ?

To be competetive at these schools you really should try to raise your scores to 2200+

skateboarder… ic u are at tufts … do u think i have a shot there ?

They like internationals a lot, but te international acceptance rate is 9%.
they also care a lot about interest, so you should make sure it’s somewhere that you really like before you apply.

thanks a lot skateboarder .

BUMP … any1 else with more suggestions ? … and which uni’s i should be looking at ?

Thanks you

I second Purdue.

How about Rose-Hulman, Olin, Cooper Union, Villanova, Cal Poly?

I have looked into purdue …

@metalforever - Cooper unioun and olin are as competetive as stanford and MIT for admission . ! …

I am looking for elite universities (super reach at which i will have a good shot universities

This is why i am not applying to MIT as it is not possible … what ant them … which 3 should i be applying to ?

1)CMU
2)Stanford
3)MIT
4)Caltech
5)Harvey Mudd
6)Bucknell
7)Cornell
8)Berkley
9)Rice
10)John Hopkins
11)Duke
12)Northwestern
13)Princeton
14)Rose hulman
15)Olin

For undergrad in MEch Eng

Well, I got into CMU for Computer Engineering. They seem to be taking a lot of internationals.

I would try:

 1. CMU (lol.)
 2. Cornell
 3. Purdue

(erm… apply to more than 3)

Bucknell ( I live like 30 miles from there, and can tell you that Bucknell is in the stix. If you want an urban campus, dont bother (same for cornell)

Rose-Hulman

Olin/MIT/Stanford (for the hell of it.)

Congratz on CMU metal forever .

I also wanted to ask u my chances at
Berkley
Rice
John Hopkins
Duke
Northwestern
Princeton

From which of these do i have a high chance ?

CMU I don’t think would be as big of a reach as the others. That’s pretty convenient as it is your first choice. Also if you’re doing Mechanical engineering definitely put Michigan at the top of your list.

Thanks.

Berkeley doesnt accept too many out of state as far as I remember (though I could be mistaken), so I wasnt sure how many internationals they take.

When I think of Johns Hopkins or Duke, I think of medical instead of mechanical engineering. I think you should choose different schools instead of those two if you want to pursue an engineering degree.

Cornell is better than Princeton at engineering, and I think cornell is easier to get into.

Northwestern, Im not sure. Rice, I think you have a chance there too, but if you had to choose between Purdue or Rice, go with Purdue (Don’t let the SAT score average fool you, its a top-notch school).

thanks a lot people …

What abt rose hulman … ? … Ir is on top of the rankings … all i want to ask is it better than Harvey Mudd , Michigan and CMU for undergrad? ?

CMU tops my list so far ! .

I dont want to apply to some Impossible schools ( buying the admission form would be like a lottery ticket ! )

So far my complete list is :-
1)CMU
1)UMichigan
3)UIUC
4)Ga TEch
5)Purdue
6)Virginia Tech
7)Cornell

I am looking for a safe (It means i dont screw up if i dont get into my top choices … so the only criteria is good-excellent mechanical engineering degree) safety .
