I’d like to quantify one thing. If someone doesn’t have the “right numbers,” if they have really stellar other factors (recruited athlete + URM + low income + legacy) they can still be admitted.

For top schools, getting great scores is equivalent to getting your foot in the door.
After that your Essays, Recs, and EC’s will be letting in you in the door.

Think about it this way, Yale and Stanford accept 7% of their applicants.

You put those 3 students into a group of 97 other random applicants, do you think that any of those 3 students stand out enough to be 1 of the 7 students in that group picked? No way.

Hopefully that makes sense.

we don’t really know what their essays and EC’s are. I think that’s the main problem here, since that’s going to be deciding whether they’ll be accepted or not

Teacher recs are all really similar though, rarely is there a bad rec and most will say student x was a pleasure to have in class, did great, was a leader, definitely a great student etc

Honestly, there probably all getting rejected… maybe # 1 will get in… #2 and # are out because of the scores… and one im sure has some emotion in essays… 1 would have the best shot by far… in theory 3 should have the best shot but it doesnt work like that in college admissions… they want high #'s… my call is either 1 or none at all.

None. Not even a reach school for any of the three. Hey just my opinion.

Alright try this one (Princeton, Columbia, Stanford):

1

SAT: 2260
SATII: 800MII 800Chem 800Physics
Rank: 1/50
EC: Good
REC: Ok
Essay: Good
White Male
(Columbia Legacy)

2

SAT: 2240
SATII: 800MII, 680Chem, 760Bio
Rank: 2/80
EC: Good
REC: Bad
Essay: Good
White Female
(Princeton Legacy)

3

SAT: 1880 (680CR, 690W, 510M)
SATII: 500MII, 560Chem, 640Bio
Rank: 2/50
EC: Good
REC: Great
Essay: Good
White Female

EXTRA INFO: All 3 took the same Chem class

For SheepGetKilled’s list:

1 has a decent chance at Columbia, #2 has a decent chance at Princeton. Can’t really say for #3 without more information, but I’m guessing she is in for some disappointment. #1 and #2 will have significantly lower chances at their non-legacy schools, unless they have some kind of hook.

Yale + Stanford get thousands of kids with high #s, and that’s all #1 has (and his numbers aren’t even perfect, a 34 ACT, a 4.4 GPA and 770/790 SAT 2s can be found in droves) and since he has absolutely nothing else according to the original info, there’s no way he would get in unless his essays were outstanding, which OP claims they are not, they’re merely “fine” (I’m not sure how OP knows this, though). I wish high #s were the main thing colleges looked for, but actually it’s the opposite (unfortunately for people like me); they want top athletes, URMs, and diversity, high SAT and GPA just isn’t enough.

Clarification: I know that all three will likely be denied. I’m asking who has the best chances.

A 4.4 GPA is extremely high here. That’s all AP/college classes.

The reason I posted this thread was not to be told the obvious; the three will likely all be denied. Yes, I get that. I’m asking who, if they did pick one, is more attractive to them?

If you want a completely unrealistic answer, just based on what you’ve posted:

-#3 is definitely the worst candidate. #3’s application would probably be rejected immediately because of his/her ACT. #3 might even get screened by a computer with an ACT that low.

-#2 might be lucky enough to have an actual human read his/her application. #2’s ACT is still a little low at the two schools, so they would have to have some kind of hook. Judging by the “bad” EC’s, I’m guessing they don’t. If #2 had “good” or “amazing” EC’s, I would probably say #2 was the best choice.

-Obviously, I think #1 is the best choice. They have a slightly above average ACT for Yale and Stanford. This higher ACT would mean adcoms would spend a reasonable amount of time thinking about the application.

I think we’re going to need to more information to properly answer your question, though. The GPA’s are pretty much the same, and I have no idea what “Amazing” or “Bad” EC’s mean. “Amazing” EC’s in your perception could be “student-body president” or it could be “helped with cancer research”.

Similar to this topic of good extracurriculars etc., how would you rate my chances at Georgetown?
