Math 300 and Math 307

I'm going to take them both, but I want to know which is easier.

Thanks.

Math 300 and Math 307

I'm going to take them both, but I want to know which is easier.

Thanks.

Very, very different courses.

Math 300 is all about proofs, 307 has nothing to do with proofs.

If you’re good at proofs, 300 will be right up your alley. It won’t help you in the least in 307, however.

Personally, I do not enjoy proofs in the least, and I’m breezing through 307.

OP - Haven’t taken either, so I can’t answer.

Hijacking thread a bit though - anyone here planning on Math 308 this fall? I’m registering tomorrow :D

I thought 307-308 was a sequence!! Why take 308 without 307?

307 also has nothing to do with 308. The former is differential equations, the latter is linear algebra. They’re as unrelated as math topics can be. I took 308 first and am taking 307 now.

So you could have taken them both at the same time?

You certainly could if you wanted to. It sucks that they’re only 3 credits each though.

How is the work load? My advisor told me that I should treat the 3 credits as if they were 5 credits…

Hmm. I’d definitely say it’s less work in general than the calc series, since the only class time is 3 lectures a week. However, I can’t speak for everyone in terms of the amount of out-of-class time you will spend trying to nail down the concepts studying & doing homework. My advisors told me to not worry about taking “low”-credit loads when considering the 3 credit math classes, and I think that’s a good rule of thumb.

Well, I have 17 credits including Math 308 for Fall and apparently that’s pretty normal at least in the CS department. A lot of people said 308 (can’t speak for 307!) is really easy, but I’ll probably be thumbing through the textbook this summer a bit to not be completely surprised in class.

@MasterKuni: do you mean, treating 13 credits as if it was 15? That’s what Math advising tells people…

@Speedsolver: how many classes?

I think treating the 13 credits with a 3 credit math class as 15 credits would be about right. Depending on how well you take to the concepts, you might be able to handle another 2-3 credits (definitely not another 5), but I can’t speak for everyone with respect to how easy they may or may not find 307 or 308 to be. If anything, it won’t reflect poorly on you to take 13 credits so long as you do well.

Xavi: 4. It theoretically shouldn’t be bad (Intro to Data Management, Intro to HCI, Information Visualization and Aesthetics, Math 308).

What are you guys taking?

I’m not registered for anything next quarter, I really don’t have a clue. I’m still not in a major yet and am going to be applying for CSE and maybe EE over the summer for autumn. I’m not very hot on the idea of pursuing EE much further though, it’s pretty tough and doesn’t click with me as well as math/cs concepts.

Ah, good luck! Maybe at least grab a few area of knowledge classes before the rest of the students register? :

Econ, Math, Statistics.
