Hey, so I will be going to collage in a few years. It is very important to me that during that time I am able to own a pet, so I have some questions about the general collage’s rules for pets.
I know that you can have a five to ten gallon aquarium, but what specifically can you keep in that aquarium? I already know that you can have a fish, but could you instead a small collection of aquatic snails? Could you have an aquatic frog? How about a giant millipede?
Could you have an aquarium that is 12x12x18? This takes up the same amount of floor space as a five gallon aquarium, it’s just taller making it an 11 gallon aquarium.
Could you keep a land dwelling frog in that aquarium? How about a small lizard? In my examples, all the animals would be small enough that a 12x12x18 aquarium is large enough for them to live very happily, for their entire lives. I would prefer to get a lizard, but I will be happy with any pet. So… Just where is the line for what you can keep in your aquarium? Does it have to be a fish?
“I know that you can have a five to ten gallon aquarium…”
Not necessarily. You can’t at my D’s school. All of this is dependent on each school’s policies.
Please don’t choose a college based on whether you can have a lizard.
I won’t I just want to know if you can have a lizard. I am assuming the collage is five gallons, since I know several collages that do let you have a five gallon aquarium and are really nice.
As stated, every college is different. The handbook will generally specify what pets, if any, are allowed. If lizards are not specifically listed, ask the college.
Also, I generally don’t get bent out of shape about spelling on the internet, but since you spelled it incorrectly 6 times, there is no “a” in college. A collage is a different thing entirely.
Sorry, I’m not the best at spelling. I have looked at a few residential life college forms for collage near me. They specify an aquarium, not what you are allowed to keep in that aquarium.
You are a few years away. But as I said, you can ask when the time comes.
One more thing to keep in mind, regardless of if the pet is allowed: dorms may close during fall/winter/spring breaks, with light and heat levels reduced. So you’d likely to have to take the pet with you on break.
You can’t get a generic answer. There isn’t one. Every single college makes their own rules.
Cool, I have been doing a lot of research, because it feels like collage is close. Mostly because my older sibling just went off to collage. Can I get an answer for a majority of collages? Like most collages that let you have a five gallon fish tank don’t mind if you have a pet frog in that fish tank?
I know that all collages are different, but I bet there is some kind of average.
I’m unaware of anyone who has gone to the effort to compile college dorm pet policies. In the absence of any actual counting, there’s no way to speak to what a majority of colleges do.
In any case, it doesn’t matter a bit what the typical college does. It only matters what the colleges that accept you do.
