It depends on the school. Columbia, for instance, weeds out pre-meds in the intro bio course (due to a certain professor). Generally, though, I'd say organic chem is not something to look forward to.

just finished orgo at Harvard, I'd say it's definitely the class that gave me the most trouble (I would call it a soul-crushing experience)

For me, physics.

The general consensus at UF is orgo, followed closely by physics.

My friends who are doctors always tell war stories about studying organic chemistry, physical chemistry, biochemistry and microbiology. Not being a physician, I don't know much about any of these, but they sound pretty bad . . . :-(

At USC, o-chem is the hardest one (especially o-chemB). However, one of the gen-bio classes (220) is also very hard (weed-out) due to both professors who teach it (Physiology part professor likes to test med-school style: application and scenario type of questions, apply what you learned).

Both physics are easy (algebra based; the one that most pre-meds take it, unless you're a pre-med and biomedical engineer major, and you have to take calculus based physics, which are harder).

USC pre-med students also take Molecular biology and biochemistry (harder than mo-bio), because Keck School of Medicine of USC and some others require them.

Physical chemistry is the hardest of the four, but only chemistry majors take it. The other three classes are not that bad. Biochemistry is a lot of memorization. I like microbio and orgo.

If you have a certain professor, starting with port ending with mess.

Gen chem 2

Physics was hardest and the most fun!, the second semester(elctromagnetism) was best

cell bio for now. I just didn't find any of it interesting, plus its the first class that I take in the morning after driving an hour to school so I fall asleep every morning in class. Horrible year for me. Ended up with a B+ in cell bio along with my other classes. My school gives B- and B+ both 3 quality points, which completely screws up my gpa. Does anyone know if med schools recalculate gpas?
Organic chemistry was by far the easiest class I took this semester despite half the class failing. Prob b/c since I knew it was a weed out class, I paid more attention. Hopefully orgo II will be as easy.

Btw what physics do you guys take? My advisor told me to take the easier physics, the one for biologiest and chemists, but I want to take physics for engineers and physicist b/c its fun and I wont have school on friday. Do you guys know if one is signficantly harder than the other? I heard that the more calc based physics can actually be easier since you can just derive things instead of using algebra. Plus it better prepares you for physical chemistry.

cell bio for now. I just didn't find any of it interesting

Yes, cell bio can be more dry than other bio classes

my dad is a dentist and he said organic chem wasnt that bad..instead other chem subjects was harder...
he said that you just needed to work hard..

Medical schools calculate your GPA on their own terms. +/- grades are weighted as .3, with the exception of the A+, which is a 4.0. Now, that assumes that your transcript shows the + and the -.

In undergrad - first semester biochem...memorizing amino acid structures, all the steps and enzymes of glycolysis and the TCA cycle...all with a horrible professor.

In med school, as I'm prepping for Step 1, microbiology (bacteria, viruses, and fungi) is looming large. No good way to remember that one bug is coagulase + and this virus is encapsulated other than memorization. Pharmacology simply due to the number and breadth of drugs (and the fact that most of the way pharm is tested is via side effects - there are only so many things that can be bad in the body when you get down to it) is also going to require a lot of time.

everhard 23: D would agree that bio 220 was a very difficult weeder course........although the professor would disagree that it was meant to be a weeder course. She made it through, but not without a lot of frustration. ;)

BRM,

Are you using First Aid for the USMLE?

Second semester everything is harder. Other than that it depends who you are. OChem and bio are a lot of memorization, physics and chem are more problem solving based. Other than that biochem is hard.

in my personal opinion, organic chemistry is one of the most interesting. physics (namely electromagnetism) is the close second.

Calculus II is a pretty difficult class.

Labs are traditionally the hardest classes for me, but ive learned to like them.
