My d is looking @ the Elliot School for undergrad. She's also looking to apply to either
1) Honors Program
2) Deans Scholars for Globalization or
3) Sommers Womans Leadership

Anyone currently involved in these programs? Opinions on how interesting/useful you find them? Are some much harder than others to get into?

Her interests are international relations, especially on the sociology/cultural end of things. Also interested in general history, literature, and peace studies.

Thanks

Any of the above programs are interesting and useful. They all afford an opportunity to be a member of a smaller, intellectual group within the larger university. It will give your D a better chance to interact with and get to know professors. She will also be alerted to opportunities such as fellowships.

It depends on what she's looking for. The honors program is more comprehensive, and it'll have plenty of students from all majors. There will be a honors global issues practicum at the end, a kind of senior project that covers "what have I learned over the last 4 years." The Dean's scholars on globalization is a lot more small, with about 20 freshmen that really get involved in the global world, and do projects with college students from other countries. The Women's Leadership one does have a specific division on "international arts and culture," so that could be suited to her. I'm a prospective student, but this is what info I have gathered. I also have heard that the honors program is very selective, with about 10% of applicants being accepted into the honors program.

thanks, any other thoughts? Anyone currently in any of these programs.

researchmaven - love your name

D applied for the Presidential Arts Scholarship (will audition) and Honors Program. She just got an e-mail from admissions suggesting she apply for the Woman's Leadership Program. From what I could gather on-line, it is a freshaman-only program and the woman all live on the Mt. Vernon campus. They take several seminars together and chose one of four focuses. Although it looks interesting, my daughter doesn't want to segregate herself on the Mt. Vernon campus and would prefer co-ed housing.

Like the original poster, does anyone have any info on these programs? Any current students in Honors or Woman's Leadership? Is there a scholarship with the Woman's Leadership program?

Thank you so much!!!

My daughter looked at the Woman's Leadership, and like yours, preferred the Foggy Bottom campus.

So she's struck that one from the list, too.
