Which SAT subject tests should I take?

I’m signed up for two subject tests on October 6, and I am a political science major. I am set on U.S. History, so the options for the second subject test are Math I, Literature, and Math II (I am in Calc 2 right now though and I skipped PreCalc, so I don’t really recall a lot of what is on the test).

US History is a good choice given your major, as for the other one I would say it depends on where you’re applying (and take all this with a grain of salt, I’m just another high school senior). The US History subject test is pretty notoriously easy (I got an 800 no problem). High scores clearly look good, but if a college requires Subject Tests and admissions officers see a lot of them, they likely know which ones are easy and which ones are harder, so taking two easy ones might make them think you don’t push yourself, even if you score high. Math 1 and Literature are famously hard to get high scores on, while Math 2 is supposed to be much easier. I only got a 760 on my Lit, but that was the 93rd percentile compared to only the 84th for my 780 in French, for example. I don’t know if colleges can see the percentiles, but if admissions sees a lot of Subject Tests, they likely have an idea of how common different scores are for different tests. If I were you, I would take Math 2 and get a high score if it’s likely that your admissions officers only have a vague idea that the tests are out of 800 and Math 1 or Lit if your top choices require Subject Tests and the admissions officers will be familiar with the range of scores for different tests. As for Math 1 vs. Lit, I’d say it depends on whether you’re trying to portray yourself as well-rounded or really good at what interests you (the humanities). Best of luck!

Some schools want to see one of the math tests. Look up the requirements at each school where you are applying.
