Which school for mechanical engineering? UCSB vs. Cal Poly Pomona

Which school would you recommend for undergrad mechanical engineering?

UCSB vs. Cal Poly Pomona

UCSB no doubt. I would say if it was against Cal Poly SLO it may be harder because Cal Poly SLO also has a good program and cheaper tuition. UCSB’s engineering school is 2nd best to UC Berkeley out of all the UCs. It is a separate school than the rest of the majors at UCSB, and can be a bit stressful. But the name is better and the campus is beautiful. Recruitment is good at UCSB and when you’re a senior, that is what you will be caring about.

Career placement at CSPU-Pomona is reportedly very good, if not excellent. Just check the list of employers whom attend career fairs at the School of Engineering. I’ve rarely heard of a ME or AE major from CSPU-Pomona not getting a job offer.

UC Santa Barbara is better than CalPoly Pomona.

2nd best? What about UCSD? And UCLA?

Engineering is ABET acredited which means you’ll study pretty much the same thing at both. However the 2 schools are night-and-day when it comes to setting, where students live, etc. Visit both and attend the one you like better.

In the back of your mind, too, consider that somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 of all students that enter college as engineering students end up changing their major outside of engineering. Nobody can predict what will happen to you, but its worth considering which school you’d want to attend should you discover engineering isn’t right for you.

I’ve visited Pomona and I didn’t like it…
I’m gonna visit UCSB this spring break and I’m definitely leaning towards it right now.
Thanks!
