The questions all in the title:
Which school has a better English program? Barnard or Boston College?

No clue about Boston College. But I do know that Barnard’s is top notch. Their writing programs are second to none…

Barnard has a spectacular English program. I seriously doubt BC could match it.

Jumpha Lahiri and Edwidge Dandicat are two recent alums who have won prestigious prizes including Pulitzers and perhaps a National Book Award.

Here are some famous Barnard alumnae writers who participated in a conference a few years ago. The list is quite amazing.

Ditto what churchmusicmom said. Barnard has a reputation for an amazing English major. BC has a strong English department, but not as strong. The New York Times did a piece last year on how great our English deparment is and how many famous writers Barnard produce - it’s that good! Search it on NYTimes :).

But - if you’re deciding between Barnard and BC, I hope that is not all you’re considering. Their English programs are relatively comparable whereas they have EXTREMELY different student bodies and social atmospheres.

Hey

I’m a first year student with no intention in majoring in English… however, I can say that the English classes here are amazing! The professors are great and extremely helpful, the discussions are tremendously interesting, and overall, I really feel like I improved in my writing and speaking.

As a first year, you take 2 semesters of English, with a variety of topics available to choose from. I took Women in Culture and Staging the American Identity, and loved both classes.

I liked it so much that I even want to take another literature course next semester, even though in high school I hated having to write.

Hopefully this helped…:)
