Which schools have technology/stage management/design major?

No one from DD high school has ever pursued a theater degree on the tech/sm side so counselord don't know. We've tried googling it.
Can you help us compile a list of colleges that have tech/sm type degrees?

Thanks in advance!

Here are some former threads with lots of information that should be helpful!

Is there a particular part of the country she is looking? What are her GPA and test scores?

My son applied to:

SUNY Purchase
CalArts
UNCSA
DePaul
Ithaca
Webster
URI

Technical Theater–Technical Direction focus for the most part, but I think they all had stage management.

He had a much longer list of potential schools before he was able to whittle it down.

D has a friend going to CCM to study stage management.

Good theater departments will offer good design and production programs, with all or most of the BFA degree programs, and some BA degree programs, offering majors in stage management. This is a longer list than you might image, but one that your counselor can provide.

Sorry end of school seems to have taken over my life. She got a 31 on ACT and is #4 in her class of 300. Her GPA is 4.1 out of 4.0 (AP classes weighted more). Smart girl. Her school counselors are of no use whatsoever. They’ve pretty much told her she will have to find them on her own.

She is looking in Midwest, we live in Milwaukee and she wants to try and stay within 6ish hours of here. But I think the perfect school could persuade her elsewhere as long as it’s a cold weather state (she does not want to go south, she hates heat).

So far, she plans to visit DePaul, CCM and UMinn. Many colleges have the major but it seems a generic theater arts degree and she really would like a specific tech/SM double major. She has tons of experience both in high schools shows as well as community theater.

I was hoping to save us time and not re-invent the wheel if there was a list out there already. I will go thru the threads listed above and see what I can find. If anyone has any other schools they know of, please post!

Thanks all!

My son started off with an enormous list and was able to whittle it down when he realized he definitely wanted a BFA in tech. All the programs he applied to are BFA programs, with specialties within them–technical direction, costume, etc. they probably all have stage management. Actually, not sure if URI has specialties, but that was a safety…no portfolio review, we were confident he’d get in academically, and he liked it.

He was very happy with all programs on his list and would have been fine going to any of them.

A few more: U Michigan, Northwestern, NYU, Boston U.

Many colleges have a theater major, but I had in mind those that are outstanding in theater. With some exceptions, those schools offer a range of design and production majors. But you’re right, not all have double tech/SM majors. Many offer a Theater Arts or Theater Studies major, which may be a way of doing the same thing, but not always. At DePaul, for example, that major is really a directing major. At Ithaca, on the other hand, it is for SM majors, among others.

Some programs teach all of the D/P subjects to all of the D/P students for the first year or two, before they have to specialize, which may be a good idea. Your daughter may eventually decide on a single major. It’s been known to happen.

We know several students who have attended Tisch for the tech program. One of their studios , linked here, is specifically for students interested in tech.

My son started with a very long list and has it down to:
BFA’s-
UNCSA
SUNY Purchase
Coastal Carolina
Otterbein
Webster
Montclair State
University of Central Florida
East Carolina University

BA’s (where he could minor in film production)
Western Carolina University
UNC Wilmington

I went through this process with my son who just finished his freshman year in a BFA Acting program and this is very different. We have visited about half of the programs. My son is an apprentice at a community theatre this summer and is going to start working on his portfolio soon. His focus is on set design and technical production right now.

Wright State in Ohio has a Design Tech BFA with a concentration in Stage Management. They also offered great merit aid for academics.
