Which SUNY is for me?

Ive looked at all the SUNYs.

My first choice for college is the Univeristy of Pittsburgh, which I was already accepted to.
The only reason I would attend a SUNY is if I can't afford PITT.

I obviously want to go a SUNY on par with pitt, which size-wise, isnt very many.

I think i'd like to go to New Paltz and could probably get in, but the fact that its only 33% male is a little dissapointing, (im female :] ).

Then I thought Binghampton, and ive visited, but I'm not sure I could get in with it getting more and more competitive and my only average SAT scores. Obviously the SUNY I apply to for back up, I want to get into. Also Genesseo has a good rep but isnt very big and is just as hard to get into.

GPA: 92
Rank: top 5% of a class of 217
SAT: 1120 (M 560 R 560)
SAT 2: Math I 580
Essay: pretty good
Letters of Rec : excellent
EC: President of Key Club, Secretary of Peer Mediating, Drama club, Student council, TONS of volunteer work, summer job experience

Any Suggestions?

The male female ratio at New Paltz has been changing every year. It is now more like 45% male and 55% female. They have been trying to balance it out as the popularity of the school has risen and the applicant pool is much larger. My son is a student there, if you have any questions about the school I’d be happy to answer them.

Oneonta, Potsdam, Buff State, Plattsburgh, Fredonia, Oswego, would all be good fits for your stats. All small colleges in small towns (with the exception of Buff State)
Binghamton would be hard for you to get into (same with Geneseo). NP may be a stretch too.

Lily Moon, My d really liked New Paltz when we toured it. One issue she had was that they require freshman to eat in one place, some far from the dorms. How did that work out for your Son? Also, NP used to have a rep as a party school (drugs). Has that been a problem?

geneseo isn’t that much small than new paltz, but you are right it is as hard to get into as binghamton.
other than saying you want something on par with pitt you haven’t really said what you’re looking for – you haven’t even said what about pitt you like or what you want to study.
just as an issue of size, buffalo and stony brook are probably the closest.

Any of the 4 Universities would be your best place to start. Forget the rankings and reputations and research all 4. Binghamton has been quite popular and difficult to gain admissions to, but the others are within reach. They are all very good schools and have their own advantages.

Lily Moon: I just went to the New Paltz site and they list their M/F % as 33/67. [State University of New York at New Paltz: Undergraduate Admissions - Application and Deposit Payment Deadlines](http://www.newpaltz.edu/admissions/didyouknow.html)

holliesue - My son is a transfer student, so he lives off campus, but when on campus he has a meal plan and eats at the dining hall or the food court in the student union building and can use his hawk dollars anywhere on and off campus. There are also a couple of restaurants on campus. The town is walking distance to campus and has tons of restaurant options.

I think the party school rep was more from years ago…now that the school has gotten more competitve and students need to have much higher stats to get in, the population is more concerned with academic success. My son has run into a few kids here and there who are “big partiers” but there are many more that he has met that are not.

lsd87 - those statistics on the male-female ratio may be from a couple years back. On the New Paltz facebook page, in which NP staff answer questions from posters, they addressed this question and said that the ratio gap is closing and posted the new ratio that was in line with what I posted. This is a new development within the last two years though, so may not be reflected in the website information.

holliesue - I’m currently a student at New Paltz. Freshmen are required to have a meal plan at Hasbrouck, the main cafeteria. It’s nothing amazing, but it’s workable. Haz’s menu is the same every week and it’s all you can eat. All freshmen students are given $50 complementary Hawk dollars with their meal plans. Hawk dollars may be used in Oscar’s(a late food place), the Student Union food court (deli/grill and pasta), Parker Theater(deli/pizza), and the coffee shops on campus. Most restaurants in town also accept Hawk dollars but I’ve only used mine on campus. I also go grocery shopping each week for the times I don’t want to eat at Haz.The food situation seems to work for everyone. Except for Shango and Bouton, the dorms are all relatively close to Hasbrouck. I don’t think your daughter would have a problem!

As for the drug scene, I don’t think it’s as bad these days. I know kids that are pretty immersed in the drug scene(by my standards) and kids that avoid it like the plague. Alcohol and drugs are still available on/off campus, but that’s the student’s choice.

Geneseo and Binghamton would probably be a reach just because their average SAT scores are in the 1300’s…that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t apply. You are more than just an SAT score. Both are excellent schools. Some students do get accepted with lower scores.

New Paltz is also a good choice.

What field are you interested in studying? Have you visited UB? Good rep in many areas, lots to do, loves involved students, friendly student body, a good match for your stats, and, imho, qualifies as “on par with Pitt” on several levels. It’s worth a look…
