Which teacher should I ask for a letter of recommendation?? (Please help)

Hi everybody,

I'm struggling with deciding which one of my teachers to ask for a letter of rec for colleges from (I'm a senior). My junior year english teacher is already writing me one and for my second one I originally wanted my Sports Medicine teacher this year (who use to be my varsity volleyball coach) write it for me since he personally knows me and understands a lot of hardships I've went through in my life. However, since some schools like Stanford require two core teachers, I think I'm going to use him as an extra letter so colleges can see that side of me as well. I can't decide which teacher to ask this week though:

AP Chemistry: He was my chemistry teacher last year. I did really really well in that class (A's) and he knows I'm very competent at the subject. However, he doesn't know me personally at all and I'm not sure how he feels about me as a person.

AP Calculus B/C: She was also my AP Calc A/B teacher last year but I did terrible in her class because it was a very hard subject for me. She saw me struggle and improve towards the end of the year after a long time of struggling. Once again she doesn't really know me personally

AP French: She absolutely loves me and knows me personally. She knows I'm a hardworker and very dedicated. The only problem is her english is not very good so I'm unsure how good the letter will turn out. Also, I want to major in Neurscience so I feel like this subject doesn't really correlate and I need a math/science teacher rec.

Also, for the schools that don't need two core, should I just have my Sports Medicine teacher be my second recommender since the others will probably be mediocre? Or should I submit all three for every college?

Wow sorry this is so long. I'd really really appreciate it if someone could help me out on this!

Some schools want a LOR from a humanities teacher (you have that covered) AND from a math/science teacher. Even if your schools don’t have that requirement, it’s still helpful to send LORs from teachers who teach vastly different subjects.
Your AP Calc teacher seems like a good candidate to ask. You mentioned that she witnessed your improvement in that class, so she definitely knows that your drive to improve is strong. Be sure to tell her that you want your academic improvement mentioned in her LOR.

Rule out the AP Chem teacher. Adcoms can see the A’s you earned right on your transcript, you don’t need to waste an LOR to reiterate that. Your teacher doesn’t know you personally, so that’s all she’ll have to talk about really, and it’s unnecessary.

AP Calculus teacher is a good candidate. He’ll be able to testify that you are a hard worker, persevere, etc which is what a LOR is for - not to talk about your grades.

AP French teacher is also a good candidate. She knows you well and can write a lot of good things - again, the point of an LOR. I wouldn’t worry about her English too much - when adcoms see it’s a French teacher they’ll understand if English is bad… not that a few grammar errors would ruin an otherwise solid LOR anyway.

Really, either one would be a good teacher to ask. They both should be able to write strong LORs, so the choice is up to you. I would lean towards the Calc teacher because some schools require a math/science teacher and this way you have all your bases covered. But French teacher is still a good option!

I’d pick the AP Calc teacher just so you can be a little more diverse one humanities and one math/science. It’s really up to you, and I found that teachers really do know you better than you might expect…
