Which teachers should I ask?

I have three teachers that come to mind for my recs.

One is an English teacher from freshman year. I did extremely well in her class and she seems to like me a lot (still says hi to me during school). I only had her for one year so I am skeptical about this rec.

I have a integrated science/chemistry teacher who I had in freshman and junior year. We get along quite well and she seems to know me quite well, but her writing ability may not be the best. I got good grades in her class.

My last candidate for a rec is my junior year spanish teacher. We also get along quite well and I often stayed awhile longer after class for some help. I got As in both semesters, but would Spanish be a suitable subject for my recommendations.

Which teachers should I ask for recommendations?

Are there any requirements for what teachers you need for a rec? some colleges require that one be from a sci/math, and another be from eng/soc studies, or w/e.

Colleges tend to prefer recommendations from junior year classes, so unless absolutely necessary, do not use a teacher from freshman year. But as mentioned, first check whether the college has guidelines for the teacher recommendations it requires.

Well, I'm applying to the UC system and several private colleges also in California.

Recommendations often include a science and a humanities. I think I should ask my chemistry teacher, but I have not decided on who to ask for my second recommendation.

Are guidance counselor recommendations necessary also?

Any suggestions.

I think the Spanish teacher would be fine - why wouldn't Spanish be a suitable subject? Foreign languages are required by most colleges...

Ask the chem teacher - I think colleges are looking more for solid examples of why you're an excellent candidate rather than critiquing a teacher's writing style.

Don't do freshman year-only teachers. Even sophomore is sketchy.

Good luck!

Oh, and guidance counselor recs may/may not be required for Secondary School Reports. You can just read the form when you're downloading/printing it :P

Most schools want your Junior and Senior teachers rec, preferrably one in science and humanities. Spanish teacher rec is perfectly acceptable. Your GC rec is also necessary. Your GC's reco would be more about your character.

Thanks

I have decided to ask my Spanish teacher and chemistry teacher then. Maybe they will have enough time to write a good rec. :)

Most colleges say that a modern language teacher would be appropriate as a humanities teacher rec

Here's some good advice from Yale's website:

"Who should write my teacher recommendations?
It is important that your recommenders be teachers who can write about your recent academic work in rigorous academic subjects. We strongly encourage students to ask 11th and 12th grade teachers to write for them. Given Yale's extremely competitive applicant pool, it is probably a mistake to ask a favorite ninth-grade teacher to write, or to seek out a coach or chorus director as a recommender unless he or she has also taught you recently in an academic course.

Yale does not specify that the recommendations come from teachers of particular subjects. It is a good idea, however, to have the two letters come from teachers of different subjects. Choose teachers who know you well and who can give us a sense of both your academic and personal strengths. "
