Im a freshmen transfer student attending a northern virginia community college. In high school my gpa came out to a 2.8 (terrible I know) with an SAT of 1790. I plan on getting somewhere between a 3.7-4.0 my freshmen year of college. I think I'll be able to achieve close to a 4.0 as my classes aren't ones that have ever been difficult for me and I'm prepared to work hard.
Composition 111
Western Civ. 102
Computer Applications
SDV (a skills class the college makes us take)
Next semester I have:
Mathematics 151 (Math for the Liberal Arts)
Intro to Political Science
Another History
Another English
An elective for my major

I'm a poltical science major. What are my chances of getting into any well known VA schools like Virginia Tech, UVA, James Madison, George Mason, VCU, etc. after only a year to make up for my highschool gpa?

I don’t think you have much of a chance after only one year of CC. Your best bet would be to complete two years and apply using the guaranteed transfer agreement program. For UVA you need a GPA of 3.5, for Radford, a 2.8. Here’s a link. You should follow the program to the letter if you want to be eligible:

I had already gotten into Radford (and was too afraid to apply to any of the others I listed) but couldn’t attend due to late financial aid. I’m already following the guaranteed admission program for as many of the schools as I could. I just don’t think I can handle living with my parents for two more years as my stepfather and I don’t get along well. I still plan on applying this year just to see if any good luck comes my way. I know people who have gotten into VCU and JMU with around a 2.5 HS gpa and only a 3.6 CC gpa after only 1 year. Thanks!
