White House Internship

Acceptees have already been notified? Anyone on this thread hear back, yet? It seems weird that people are still getting interviewed while other people have received offers…

The person who says they got the job probably mistook the interviews as an acceptance. That would be the only way to really explain it.

So, I just had an interview to volunteer at my DA’s office. They told me that when they did a bg check, it appears someone is using my SSN. This didn’t dissuade them from accepting me, but I think it’s mostly because they met with me and realized there might be some ID theft going on as opposed to a problem on my end. While this may be a big misunderstanding, it’s apparently showing up on the bg check. Here’s my conundrum.

I know acceptances are probs coming out this week. I didn’t get an interview this session, but I did for the Fall. I was one of twelve interviewed for six positions and it went really well. While I fully accept that they just didn’t want to take me, I have wondered if it were a problem with the bg check, considering I didn’t hear anything this cycle and my app was definitely better this time. Should I bother contacting the WH about this? On the one hand, I accept it’s likely too late to change anything (if there’s anything to change). On the other, I feel like my name has been besmirched or something.

Edit to say: Mostly since it’s so confusing on my end to figure out exactly how my ID may have been stolen or misused, I don’t want to contact the WH with only half information. But by the time I get it figured out, if there were even the smallest chance this screwed up my app, it might be too late to fix it. So I guess it’s more like, contact them now or later with more info and risk it being too late?

fieldsofgold,
Better to ask them about it and let them know, than to ask yourself later on if you had done enough…
It never hurts to be proactive

Thanks cobom1! I let them know. I felt a little weird about it, because it felt like complaining or something. Because it seems way more likely that I was rejected just because they chose not to go with me. So, I might be making a thing out of nothing. I appreciate the advice. Whatever happens, it’s probably best I notified them!

Do you know what kind of information is showing up? Is it only like financial, credit report stuff or is it criminal? I think that matters if you decide to contact them.

Unfortunately, I don’t know yet. The process of getting this straightened out includes a lot of red tape. I definitely agree that depending on the type of misuse it would carry a different weight. That’s why I really wanted to have all the info before I contacted the WH. However, I realized it might take a while to get all the answers and even though it’s a long shot that my bgcheck was what’s keeping me out AND if they found out about it I might be put back in the running, if I waited, it might really be too late. Ugh. It’s just frustrating.

fieldsofgold:

I have a suggestion. How about you run a background check on yourself? Various states offer these services, and this report would allow you to see what people are seeing when they run a background check on you. If you really want to get to the bottom of this, I think this is the best approach. Best of luck!

No one has any updates at all…? This seems so different than the previous app process.

I think its quiet bc we already know how it works now. While this is my first time applying i read all the previous posts from the summer and fall, and know already that we won’t find out until Friday. So I guess its pretty much a waiting game until then.

I was here in the summer for the fall selection process. I think that since we all have a much more articulated vision of the process, there’s less speculation. We even played trivia to pass the time. I have the feeling that the mechanism is much more refined this time around, second request for resumes or not. I think we will indeed have our answers by Friday, if not sooner. I would be shocked if it was delayed. In the name of all that is holy, I hope we get in this time.

Just to update on my status:
I did receive one of the secondary emails asking for clarification of personal information, but have yet to receive an interview. I recently spoke to a friend who has WH intern experience, and was told that interviews are important. But, if there is a good amount of information in your application/resume to describe your abilities, it may be all that a dept may need to put you on their pref lists.
Best of luck all

I agree with np006. The process seems more transparent this time around. It is easy to contact the WH for more info about the internship, and people actually respond to emails/calls etc. Judging by their performance this time around, I was thinking they would let us know by Thursday. But we will have to wait and see. BTW, I was told a typical intern schedule is Monday-Friday 9-6. Sounds intense! Hope for the best for everyone!

Intern2000, you said something about calling the WH. Have you did that? If so what did they say? Has anybody else tried to call to find out anything?

Why dont they just say that they’ll tell us Friday instead of making us all nervous lol… Does anyone know how they will notify those who get it and those who do not?

I called them a few days ago, and they said they would let us know by the end of the week. And they said they will contact us via. email. Lets see what happens. Two more days to go!!!

I just wish the process was a bit more transparent… For instance:

Stage 1: Applications Reviewed
Stage 2: Background Checks for those who have not been eliminated during Stage 1
Stage 3: White House Internship Team distributes list of finalists to individual departments for additional screening
Stage 4: Individual departments interview their selected applicants and submit final recommendations to White House Internship Team
Stage 5: White House Internship Team sends out notifications to all applicants.

Wouldn’t it be lovely if we knew how this whole thing was working? Then I could know that not getting an interview meant I had been eliminated…

Yea, I with you on that - I wish I knew where I stood. For instance, if I was eliminated weeks ago, I wouldn’t mind knowing that already. Also, I heard that the background check doesn’t come until after we have been accepted since there is 2 month lapse between when we find out and when we actually start.

This has absolutely been the longest week ever. I just want to know already. One more day.

And what if someone doesn’t pass the background check after being selected? Or they turn the internship down?

Do they then fill those slots?
