White House Internship

Guys…Some guttural instinct tells me that WH2010 has more than just inside information. His or her post quality, along with the informative nature of each post, tells me that ‘WH2010’ may actually be a member of the White House internship office.

Regardless, I did not get a request-for-more-information e-mail, so maybe I’m just inventing some sort of conspiracy theory to comfort myself.

So, basically Roneald, I feel like we’ve been given an unofficial official announcement from the white house.

So basically if we didn’t get an email and we haven’t had any references contacted our chances aren’t looking too good. lol… has anyone had a phone interview?

just had mine today. was told that I’ve “made it to the final round” but the interview overall didn’t go too well :(

^ Did they schedule an interview with you before hand via email, or did someone just call and be like “Hey I’m from the White House I’d like to ask you a few questions” ?

Also, could you mention if you got one of the aforementioned “likely” emails?

Sorry about the name-jack, hopeful. Just seems like a good idea.

LW,

also: what time was your interview and were your references contacted?

hopeful0527 & TheDoctor: I believe the email is a good sign, but do not count yourselves out of the running. Many times these “likely” emails are sent later than others, and there has been instances where those who had been rejected were contacted later for interviews. You never know.

roneald: LW Trojan received the “likely” email, as you can see from his previous posts.

LW Trojan: Do you mind elaborating on your interview experience? I’m sure current and future applicants would highly appreciate it.

I received a voicemail yesterday asking me to call OPA (Office of Political Affairs) for an interview that would be conducted over the phone. Had I not missed the first phone call, I imagine the (unscheduled) phone interview would have taken place then.

@roneald, my interviewer made it clear that this was an interview, and that I would be notified in 2-3 weeks. Also, I did get an email Tuesday asking me for more information; I’m reluctant to say that it was a “likely” email because calling it such is merely speculation. What I can say is that I was told by the interviewer that I had “made it to the final round.”

@hopeful0528, not sure if my references were contacted. Also, I received the voicemail yesterday around 1:30PM, but I didn’t call back until today at 12PM. Once I called, the interviewer asked me a few questions and the interview ended in ~10 minutes.

LW Trojan: Why do you feel the interview didn’t go well?

LW Trojan, thanks for the update.

When you received the call, do you know if it was a blocked number? I actually received a missed call from a "Private Number’ at around 12 PM PST yesterday, but no voicemail was left. Also, would you mind elaborating on what types of questions they asked you? Not really looking for specifics, but more just was it political/technical questions about government (questions on current events), or more just questions about things on your resume/essays?

Thanks for the updates.

@WH2010, I was under the impression that the office had an updated version of my resume, so I didn’t elaborate on some of the points that I probably should have.

@roneald, no - the number was not from a pvt. caller; 202 Area code. As far as the questions, they were not at all related to politics. I would say that they were similar to those you would expect from a job interview (e.g., What makes you more qualified than other applicants?)

Awesome, thanks for all the help LW Trojan.

Sorry, but last question (I promise -_-x): Did they call you on your cell phone, or house phone number? I know that both were asked for but only the house number was required, so just wondering how they chose to contact you.

Thanks again!

@roneald, I always put my cell phone number down as both my home # and cell # so I’m not sure which one the WH tried to contact.

^ Smart thinking, I should do that in the future.

Thanks again, and best of luck to you in the final round.

PS. I know I said that was my last question, but this just came to mind: Did they mention what department you were being interviewed for, or just for a position in general? Would you mind sharing what your top choice(s) were?

@roneald, Yes - OPA (The Office of Political Affairs). These were my choices:

[ul][]Office of the First Lady
[]Office of Mgmt. and Admin.
[]Scheduling and Advance
[]Office of Presidential Correspondence
[]Office of Vice President
[]Office of Presidential Personnel
[]Office of the Chief of Staff
[]Domestic Policy Council
[li]OPE/IGA[/li][li]Office of Political Affairs[/ul]
[/li]

In all honesty, I would be happy to intern for any of these offices. I chose them based only on whether or not they matched my skill set; the order almost didn’t matter to me.

Ah sorry, I had assumed that all interviews were conducted through the OPA. Was that the order you had them listed? Just wondering if they were willing to give you an interview for your last option.

They were in order on my last post.

Does anyone know when most people will find out whether or not they got an interview?

Considering decisions come out next week, this week is probably the last chance to get interviewed. Good luck!

LW Trojan: I wasn’t there for the interview, but it sounded like you did well. Updated resume or not, you were impressive enough to be a finalist, so I’m sure you had a lot to talk about. You should definitely feel proud that you’ve made it this far.

“I’m reluctant to say that it was a “likely” email because calling it such is merely speculation.”

If you look at the posts from the Spring 10 internship process, every person who was accepted received a vitals email. You’re free to dismiss it as “merely speculation,” but I think those who received the email should feel proud and excited. Especially when a member of the internship office says it’s “definitely a good sign.”

cdog08: Looking at previous posts, the interviews are pretty spread out. It appears to be based on which department you’re interviewing for. And if you don’t get an interview, it doesn’t make you a lost cause. CC member aspiringWHI was accepted by her 1st choice department without getting an interview.

hopeful0528: Again, looking at previous posts, the White House emailed decisions two weeks after the posted notification date in the Summer 09, Fall 09, and Spring 10. I’m not saying that’s going to happen this time, but it’s a possibility. The person I spoke to in the internship office said status updates are going to be emailed the week of April 5th. So, the wait is almost over.

Well, good luck everyone!
