White House Internship

I’d guess notifications will be sent out tomorrow. Of the past three internship classes and 2/3 of the decisions were sent out the friday of the specified week. By late afternoon tomorrow we will likely know.

Funny, I’ve started to think that the notices will come Friday (maybe, Saturday). That way, the rejected candidates can take the weekend to “process” instead of flooding the switchboard with questions and such. I could also just be overthinking it all. [shrug]

Good luck (and thanks for calling to get the update).

Well, fingers crossed that you’re right. I’m with most of the people in here. Low expectations. I just want to know!! Here’s hoping my target departments don’t interview…

I agree that it would be smart to tell us on Friday to avoid the influx of a million calls- I wish we knew if we were getting called or emailed…In any case- Fingers crossed for us all! (I feel like we deserve extra brownie points for working together like little detectives to piece this thing together, haha. It’s been good to know that I’m not the only one stressing!)

Yea we do deserve brownie points!! I’m going to be so relieved to finally have a decision tomorrow so I won’t have to go on this sit and analyze every little thing the white house internship program makes lol. Well in any event best of luck to you all! Let’s hope someone from this string is accepted. Then we can live vicariously through that one individual. Lol.

Hey Guys. I just wanted to say that I, like all of us, am anxiously awaiting the acceptance/rejection emails that are due to come out tomorrow. I haven’t posted, but I thank every one of you for keeping this thread alive throughout the Summer 2010 process; it has truly been a wealth of information. Good luck to everyone and I hope to see you in DC this summer!

Once people get their decisions, do you mind writing if you received a vitals email and/or an interview? I think it’ll help those who are applying in the Fall.

Good luck everyone!

To add on to what WH2010 said, if you could also indicate what office you applied for and how you were notified, that would also help a lot.

Good luck today/tomorrow everyone!

No notices yet…though I’m crossing my fingers for everyone. I don’t have the highest of hopes anymore, having not received an e-mail or anything. But on the bright side, this is such a competitive process with so many applicants that I don’t think being rejected is a reflection of anyone’s lack of skill or commitment. Plus, there are a thousand other very important places to volunteer/intern in DC. Though of course the White House would be ideal, this shouldn’t stop anyone from working toward such a goal of continuing to make positive change in society. Still, however, until we get a notification, the twinkle of faith remains!

I was asked to confirm my vitals via email the week of the 22rd of March and had a telephone interview later that week with the Office of Political Affairs. They told me to expect a response two to three weeks from the interview date, so theoretically until next Thursday. I am sort of banking on finding out sometime today because it matches up with the online calendar…

This suspense thing is killing me. I have a great internship for this summer which I’ve already been accepted to, but I can’t sign for housing or anything until I know about this… It’s alright though because there are other people in the same boat as me! I can’t even say what sort of solace it that after I find my inbox once again devoid of White House messages, there is at least one more post on here!

On the random side, here’s a quote I really like:

Be strong–no matter how hard things get, walk into the wind.
Well, at least until your lips chap.

I definitely don’t think I have a chance since I wasn’t interviewed. I guess there’s always next time.

I don’t think I had a chance either since I was given an interview, either. Also, given that my friend found out on wednesday that she got a position, I’d be willing to bet those who were offered a position were notified earlier this week so that they would be able to ask questions an make arrangements. Also, it works the opposite way for us; it’s early friday afternoon and we STILL have not heard. They will probably notify us as late in the day as is possible so they won’t have to deal with us, the rejected applicants.

It’s rather depressing, but oh well, what can you do?

WH2010, you said it yourself: people have gotten it without interviews before.

I’m right where you are: vitals email, no interview, and I’m telling myself the same thing you are-that I probably didn’t get it, but let’s not give up hope until we have to.

Gandalf, looking through past stuff, that doesn’t appear true. I searched the entire twitter network for the words white house intern, and not one person seems to have been notified of their acceptance. Either not one of the 100 accepted interns has a twitter, or (more likely), decisions honestly haven’t come out yet. Moreover, the Spring admissions cycle had people even finding out of acceptance by email and phone, the same way everyone else found out about their rejection. So I wouldn’t go solely by that. Your friend/acquaintance most likely mistook (or exaggerated) a late interview as an acceptance.

Damnit, I’m nervous.

Just made an account because I’ve been lurking all this time, and I want to say that I’m waiting alongside all of you, I’m on pins and needles just like all of you, and even if I don’t get it I really appreciate all the information this thread has provided. :)

I applied with the NSC as my top choice.

I figured my background would give me a strong shot:

-B.S./M.A. from Georgetown in National Security Studies, finished both degrees together in 4 years magna cum laude, ample work experience at CFR and other think-tanks.

-Experience living/working in China and Japan, fluency in Mandarin, proficiency in Japanese.

-Currently 2/3rds of the way through writing a book on advanced spoken mandarin for diplomats/IR types.

-Recommendations from, among others, the former head of the National Security Council for East Asia.

-Internal recommendation from a WH staffer.

Got the vitals e-mail, haven’t heard anything since. Nobody’s specifically mentioned a phone interview with NSC so far, so I’m hoping that means they’re one of the places that doesn’t do phone interviews. (If anyone did a phone interview with NSC, please let me know and burst my bubble, knowing at least would be nice.) So, yeah – pins and needles, pins and needles. :)

At Televangelist: If you don’t get the internship I have no idea who would. You’re probably one of the most qualified applicants available!!

Eh, you never know. Right now the economy is just ridiculous and there are just so many applicants for everything that really, who knows.

I moved back to DC from China in January, and I’ve been applying for everything China-related I can get my hands on; so far, I get short-listed for everything, but I haven’t come out on top for anything yet. Sometimes I get a personal letter from the HR guy in addition to the rejection letter, saying something along the lines of “I know that you’re really, really well qualified, and normally you’d be a great candidate, but we received 4 times the applications we’d receive in previous years and you’re up against people with 5 or 10 years of experience who are out of work, so good luck.”

Best of luck to all of you! :)

I just called the White House Internship Office; they will be notifying us by this week, but that includes the weekend.

48 hours more?

…Oy.

Seriously? This is getting a little absurd…
