Hey all! I'm a white guy who's very interested in going to Howard because of its location, its history, and its value, and because I think there's a lot of learning I could get out of being one of the few white kids at an HBCU. I'm not really unaccustomed to being in the minority in school, as I've always been in classes with lots of minorities (usually Asian or Latin) but I'm still worried about going to Howard and being socially accepted. Beyond being white, I'm also gay and have a huge interest in hip-hop, and I worry that if I go to Howard that people will think I'm a wannabe or a poser or will simply have problems with my race and sexuality. I know no one is going to be ridiculously mean or anything, but I really want to enjoy the social atmosphere at the college that I go to and I wonder, will I be socially accepted at Howard?

Honestly, I think you will be accepted. I can only speak for myself, I won’t mind. at all… Most of my friends are white. Howard really is very accepting and a good place to be.

I don’t know if you’ll read this but I’m a current student at Howard. And I can tell you that there is nothing to be worried about. There are quite a few white people on campus and no one treats them any differently.

Its really all about who you decide to surround yourself with and how much you will let others bother you. Personally, I go to Howard, look totally white, am non-hetero, and love it here. We have a fun gay community, and the school as a whole is rarely judgmental. But make sure you’re coming here for the right reasons. Come visit, sit in on classes in the majors you’re interested in, see how their compare to others, and talk to people!
