I am a caucasian student who will be applying to Howard. I have absolutely no problem with attending an all-black school, but I am concerned about the reception white students get at the school. I realize that this is an acclaimed university of higher education, and that people are not going to be disgustingly biased, but I still fear that there may be a little bit of animosity. Can anyone report to me on this?

Also, I have heard the neighborhood around Howard is very dangerous and that people have been jumped and stabbed. Can someone elaborate on this as well?

Thanks!

I am currently a freshman at howard university and I am also very close friends with two caucasian freshman students, one of whom is my best friend from high school. In all honesty I know that they have both delt with situations where their race has come up, but they also are both very well adjusted. They have great social lives and are both doing very well in school. I just really think as long as you're comfortable with yourself and understand your reasons for choosing Howard you will be fine.

As for the nighboorhood, yes, there is violence, and yes, this year there has been a lot of crime (why? I dont know). It all really comes down to being safe and following your gut feeling. Of course anything can happen to anybody but once you get here you quickly learn what to do and what not to do. Im from a small town so I had to learn quickly but I have been fine, and you'll be fine too.

Thanks for the response.

What do you mean by "situations where their race has come up"? I'm hoping nothing violent or heated...?

I don't want to seem sexist or racist, but how do the African American males get along with the white males? It seems like, at least in my high school, that African American girls and white girls get along much better than African American guys and white guys.

Have there been any instances of Howard students getting jumped or killed?

IDK, when I was there I saw some white students, and they seemed completely comfortable. I don't think you should worry about it.
