white non-legacy non-athletes are screwed

First of all, Pyrrhus, your numbers are wrong. The numbers aren't any big secret: they're published on Princeton's news website as headline news. It's only 41% minorities, which is on target with Harvard and Yale's distributions. Dean Rapelye has also instituted measures causing the legacy admit rate to drop and the economic diversity of the class to broaden. Plus, your logic excludes the possibility that there's any overlap between minorities, athletes, and legacies. Taking that into consideration, it's probably more like 60% open, not 30%. There's not much that she can do about athletes and legacies--they're at their lowest possible numbers without causing the alumni to start withdrawing funding. It's the same predicament of any ivy.

oh btw, I look like the all american tourist even though I'm really involved in armenian issues and go there every summer

I remember walking in a bad part of Yerevan once and having some armenians trying to hustle me thinking I was a tourist. When I started cursing at them in perfect gramatically impeccable armenian, they were really startled :) and I didnt get hustled :D :D

just to show, you can never judge a book by its cover

haha I used to live in an area where there were a ton of Armenians...Glendale! lol

they're nice people with great food :)

Oh, I'd also like to add that the guy you mentioned who wants to mark himself off as hispanic would have his admission rescinded. It says pretty clearly that, for instance, a caucasian from Africa may not classify himself as African American right on schools' application forms.

Also, if we continued educating only those who were in equal social positions, with equal opportunity, etc., who would ever get a chance to break through the glass ceiling from below? When slaves were liberated, would it have been fair to simply say that they would have to work their way up by themselves, with absolutely no assistance (even though that's partially what was done to them)? No. Without anyone proactively including different races and different financial groups in college education, african americans would still be virtually enslaved by white people--if not legally, economically.

Try some W.E. DuBois.

true.... but I dont like glendale.

I like pasadena more

Glendale is little armenia, albeit a bit more wealthier version

I'm not sure if I'm really minority because I'm half white, half Asian.

you're a multiracial american :-/

This whole thread is sketchy...

hah... sketchy.... thats such a california term

no we say "sketchy" all the time in massachusetts

also, what exactly qualifies as "a minority"?

(technically i mean, as in how do colleges qualify you, haha not philosophically)

really.... I never heard it in all the time I spent on the east coast

hmm.. thats pretty sketchy

Pyrrhus: overrepresented minority as jews may be, we're not designated as such on college applications asking for race. are you sure that jews are included in that 50%? ...because i am pretty sure i would be grouped by p-ton with the rest of the people designating themselves as white...

I guess my S beat the system.
White Male
Non-Athlete
Very Jewish Last Name
SAT I 1420
And the worst location....from NY suburbs

With Princeton one needs a hook and you have to do something to make your app stand out.

I think the last name helps A LOT. nopoison. I think anyone from a previously hardship-bearing people gets a second look.
And btw, you guys, step back and realize that we European Americans have had this advantage for quite some time now. The whole theory of affirmative action is to give everyone a shot and while it is not perfect, and while it stings, it is a value we have to support as Americans. My beef is the economic thing...god, my parents had to apply in an age that was need-blind and favoring of the rich...now I'm getting bumped off for people who need the $ like they did in the 70's---so much for working one's tail off to get your kids into an advantaged position, huh?!

christopher, your numbers are clearly wrong. 60 + 41 + (whatever athletes and legacies are) > 100.

Are asians from Asia considered minorities?
If yes, then how come the admission rate for Asians are still so low?
Most of the applicants got high scores for SATs.
So are the low scorers considered minorities too??
I have extremely low score for my verbal: 560..
hopefully i'm minor.

"This whole thread is sketchy..."

Welcome to CC, mirandajuly. The better half of it is sketchy.

Hi Valdez....long time no talk...Here I am waiting for my letter, again. Why are they making me suffer?
How does it feel to look upon us with a smile in your face?
