Whitman vs. Kenyon

can anyone compare these two schools? (socially, academically, the environment..etc.)

I visited Kenyon earlier in the year, but have yet to visit Whitman. Even though I plan to attend a small liberal arts college, I decided not to apply to Kenyon after my visit. The campus is the tinest out of all I've looked at so far, even for a small college.

The acamedic level application-wise is higher for Whitman, though Kenyon is slowing creeping up in that direction.

I had a friend of a friend show me around for an informal tour at Kenyon, and when I asked what they did for fun because there is nothing as far as college town-esque activities, he told me they watched a lot of DVDs. That's not what I really want my college experience to consist of.

I know that was a tad biased, but I hope that helped!

Okay, since someone added info about Kenyon, I'll help you out with Whitman!

So, Whitman is awesome, to say the least. It's incredibly active and friendly. The campus is BEAUTIFUL. There were already flowers blooming when I was there, and it was February. I also was able to walk around without a jacket at the same time. The weather is lovely.

Socially, Whitman seems really friendly, social, and active. Lots of intramural sports (which, I took note of, included a WIDE variety of people). Their food is amazing--Bon Appetit. I ate lunch there and SO much variety was presented.

The dorms are gorgeous. Princeton Review has Whitman on the list for "Dorms Like Palaces"--and it's true. They're gorgeous and very home-y.

Walla Walla itself is really cute. I come from a town 1/6 of the size of Walla Walla, so it's "smallness" doesn't bother me as much. There are lots of restaurants and a few shops (including a semi-well-stocked Macy's).

But every Whittie I spoke to said that they hardly ever leave campus. Everything is there!

LAUNDRY IS FREE. Yes. I am trying not to be swayed by all of the little "perks" at Whitman...but it's hard not to. The fact that laundry is free makes it feel more like home.

All of the buildings are really gorgeous too. Their library is INCREDIBLE...they have everything. The library, gym, and computer labs (stocked with Macs AND PCs) are open 24/7, and the computer labs all have free black/white printing. Their theatre is phenomenal, it's sooo cool. You just have to see it, it can't be described.

The staff is also amazing--very welcoming and kind. They will do anything to help you out.

If you're not a senior, I highly suggest taking a tour. If you're an admitted student, I HIGHLY suggest the Admitted Students Day in April. Try to arrange an overnight stay, too!

After I visited, I was sold on Whitman. It's just incredible. Plus, they're really generous with financial aid.

Hope this helps!

Visited both campuses and agree with both previous posters. Quality of life differences are substantial. Whitman's facilities are very nice - dorms, library, theater, auditoriums, student center, gym, recital hall - all reflect the careful attention of an administration focused on supporting a lively, happy learning community. Both schools are in rather remote, rural locales but somehow, Kenyon seemed isolated and a little depressing; Whitman didn't.
