Are they usually alumnae? Faculty members? or hired outside help? Some combination of the three?

We are full-time admission officers...this isn't something that we do for a few months each year. We travel in the fall, manage the application process in the winter, plan events in the fall and spring, give information sessions and interviews year-round...you get the picture. At some schools, we are classified as faculty and at others, we are administrators. Some schools also have faculty and students assist with the review process.

One "adcom" is one admission committee. Each admission committee is made up of some larger number of admission officers. As Dean J (a very helpful member here on CC) has pointed out, being an admission officer is a full-time job at a typical college or university. At different seasons of the year, the work duties vary somewhat to fit the overall annual pattern of the admission cycle.

Good luck to all of you students who have just submitted applications.
