I know there might be differences in programs, but usually in study abroad programs, do you pay your regular university tuition or tuition to the university you are attending? Because, if you pay the university you are attending, studying abroad would be a great way to save money, since most universities abroad are cheaper than U.S.

Like you mentioned, it really depends on what program you’re going through. If you’re going through you’re home university, like I am, you’ll probably have to pay your usual full tuition. If your school provides you with an over seas adviser or other forms of aid, they can get away with charging you the extra money you would other wise be saving because they provide you with “extra services” that you wouldn’t get other wise. It’s kinda lame, but the paper work is the same paperwork you’ve been doing since you got to college, and, you don’t have to worry about dealing with a foreign bursars office.

I don’t have experience with this one, but if you’re going through an actual “study abroad program”, I’m assuming you’d pay them. These are programs that aren’t sponsored by your home or abroad institutions. They are independent programs.

You’re right about saving money. If you pay tuition directly to your abroad university, you could save tens of thousands of dollars. Here’s the problem - if your home university requires you to pay your normal tuition through them, and you try to get around it by paying your abroad universities tuition, then your home university may decide that they wont accept your class credits from abroad.

The best way to get an answer is to talk to your home university if you’re not going through an independent program. It’s better to get a definite answer from them than to wait and find out you won’t be getting class credit.
