I've noticed that many people take certain classes/clubs just so they can look good for colleges. Is anyone else tired of doing this?

I sure am. We need to change this educational system to one that doesn't stress HS out.

I do things that I enjoy.

I agree completely. So many college applicants are fake and uninterested. I have interests, but hate angling them to look good for college.

^^Such as…?

But, i mean you do things that you don’t enjoy just so they look good for college don’t you?

Ivy. I know. I hate always having to work an angle.

9 times out of 10 the ECs and volunteering that you do to look good for college hardly help you. It’s somewhat difficult to fake the kind of interest that top universities are looking for.

I don’t sell myself to colleges.
Colleges sell themselves to me.

^ Well said.

@OP. True ****. Preach it.

daxlo, how do you propose the educational system be changed? And have you considered the numerous people who are able to be relatively stress-free while still maintaining great EC’s, scores, and such?

Completely agree.

Kids who can only think about school really irk me. I mean, I care about how I do and all… but common. In terms of clubs… I do Jazz Ensemble because I love jazz & blues, and I did swimming until this year because of a shoulder problem.

At least the college mailings have ended… I have plenty of fire-starting material for the winter -_-

Seahawks i have but, i’m referring to the countless droves of us who don’t enjoy all of our activities.

I hate the “Why X” questions

*I don’t sell myself to colleges.
Colleges sell themselves to me. *
I love that.

But yea in the past few months I’ve gone a full 360 from I don’t give a **** to oh my gosh do everything I can for college back to screw this ****.

Im pretty sure most colleges would be able to see past that your only doing these activities just for the sake of college admissions, at least the higher leveled ones.

The people who do things for college seem to end up looking less impressive than the people who really follow what interests them.

^IDK I think how well adcoms can see through bullcrap is sort of overstated. A lot of times it’s sort of murky, b/c you like something, but you wouldn’t necessarily spend 20 hours a week pursuing it were it not for colleges.

Except knowing how to sell yourself is one of the most important skills you can learn. Kinda sucks, especially when you end up doing things you otherwise wouldn’t do or wouldn’t follow through as extensively if it were not for pleasing someone else. Nothing you can do but play by the rules, at least until you make it to the top, at which point you could basically make up your own.

I am applying to some of the most selective colleges in the country.

But that hardly matters, for I am one of the most selective students in the country.

Not really. I wouldn’t do anything just because colleges like it, it would be beneficial for my growth as a person as I would be interested and passionate about it) or else I wouldn’t do it. Except maybe the SATs.

HAHA hanana I lawled.

It’s also interesting when you find CCers who go to your school who have these “chance me!” posts with extracurrics that definitely are bs-ed… Those desperate to get into the “top” schools just for getting into the “top” schools have to sell an “enhanced”, completely exaggerated version of themselves. I think that is sad.

Where da eff be integrity man?!

^I know man. My NHS hasn’t done a single thing all year. And yet, ~150 students from my class will be putting it down on their resumes and applications.
