I feel your woe, summer assignments are bogging me down pretty bad (.. although this is usually about the point in summer when they do anyway). I haven't really thought about the essay much, but now that you mention it, I plan on getting aps done with and in by sept/oct.. and that's only a month or two..... ugghhh

edit:
haha, martha, I think "how I became bitter and insecure" would be a great essay..

yeah i agree w/lianris.. don't force it. or else u're just going to start to write a new one again. just keep brainstorming, freewriting, journaling... it'll come

me too, I have not started on my essay yet although I have kept a blog which sort of record down most of the significant events of this year which I could probably use when I write my essay

My boyfriend wrote his the day before he sent out his apps, and it ended up being pretty good. It was about the anime conference he goes to every year.

Yes you only write one of the five choices [is it five, not sure but anyway] and send that to every school plus each respective school's supplementary essay [if there is one]

OMG ! I haven't buckled down to anything ( including studying for the SAT, college search etc ). And as for essays, I ain't having the faintest idea what they will be about. Such a procastination ! :)

I did one good one that just came to me in one night (stayed up til 2, because I thought it was flowing real well), and I did a crappy one a few days ago. Last night I stayed up til 3 rewriting my crappy one, hope this is worth it.

I still have 4 more essays to write. Common app doesn't look too bad right about now.

hahahaha, i didn't do my main common app essay until september. and i didn't do my other essays (for like Northwestern and JHU) until the night before the app was due. procrastination FTW!!!!

so, you don't have to waste your summer before senior year doing college essays. they are important but too much tweaking and editing can make them sound pretentious and disingenuous. of course, that being said, you probably shouldn't go my route and procrastinate and then spit out like 5 essays in a frenzied hurry...

oh, and btw, i got accepted to 10 of my 11 schools. and 7 of those 10 were top 25 schools. 2 were top 50 and 1 was top 100. so, just relax and do them as they come. don't spend summer trying to write the perfect essay. spend it enjoying your time as a high school student.

Same here, I think procrastination leaves the best results :D but yeah, definitely just enjoy your senior year of high school, you only have one after all.

I'm planning to apply to UPenn. Do you recommend using UPenn's application itself or using the common app ( which they have begun accepting from this year onwards ). I'm thinking ( and was told by others on this board ) that the fact they accept common app means that they dont mind it... What are your thoughts on it?

I believe there are some schools that don't even have their own app anymore, just some supplements. Common App member schools are required to view it exactly the same as their own, but then again, what the school agrees to may not be the opinion of each individial adcom. Using the institutional app may make you seem more serious about it, eg you took the time to do it instead of just photocopying something ten times.

It really depnds on you really, b/c if UPenn is your first choice then I would say do their application, if otherwise or you just don't have the time then I say go for the common app because they won't discriminate against you.

Wait, don't any of you have jobs/summer programs/internships that take up your time? Or are you all seriously sitting in front of a computer all day obsessing over essay topics?
