I bombed fall semester, and am trying to figure out if I'm dumb, or just lazy. If someone here got like a 500 on their math SAT, and has a 3.5, that would be really inspiring for me to start working harder, haha. Also, what would you say is the threshold for one to pass engineering?

500 on the math SAT is about the 50th percentile for females and less than 40th percentile for males. If someone had a 500 on the math SAT and managed to get a 3.5 in an engineering major, I would suspect extreme grade inflation.

Okay, how about 600?

lol, good luck finding anyone who didn't ace their SATs on this board...

Or who would be willing to admit it...

I just want to know if I should really work my rear-end off, or accept my idiocy and drop out. So if it's you that got a low score, or if it's somebody you know, I want to hear about it.

Work your rear-end off anyway and decide whether to drop out after you get the end-results from that.

Are you still in high school or have you started an engineering program in college?

I guess he's talking about the new SAT scores? 500-600 is well above average for the "old" SAT.

My old SAT math score was in the mid-600s. I think I remember getting a 500-something on the SAT II math test because I didn't study any of the material and hadn't seen it in awhile. I think the SAT is not a very good indication of your potential in a college degree. People who take an extensive SAT prep course are at a higher advantage, as well as people who retain information better and test well.

I personally think almost anyone could pass engineering if they are motivated enough. They may have to take a light course load and get a lot of tutoring or help from professors, but the concepts aren't way out there. If you have good problem-solving skills, and are willing to give a 100% effort, then you could probably make it.

I RUINED my SAT math because I took when i was on vacation in an asian country. I had to drive all night to get to the test and I never prepared for it. In the end I got 520 on the test. But wait... I Took Calc 1 2 3 , and had A's in all of them. My college gpa is 3.6. SAT Math is not a matter of knowledge, its practice. You have to know the tricks and tips to do the problem quickly. Thats all, dont go and tick away like a mad man. In my opinion if this is your first test, consider is negligible. A single test cannot determine if your good enough for engineering.

damn. if this asked for a hilariously low reading or writing score, mine would apply

SAT is a test of knowledge, not intelligence, right?

I agree that SAT math scores should not be used as THE determining factor in whether to continue in engineering...

"SAT is a test of knowledge, not intelligence, right?"

I always thought of it as an IQ test, seeing as how all the smart/lazy kids do far better on it than the studious-female crowd.

LOL ^^ stereotype

no not knowledge at all. Its all 8th and 9th grade stuff to be honest. At least for me because I was high schooled overseas.

SAT Math is outrageously easy. Don't even go as far as to say I didn't study or I didn't practice. If you did well in AP Calc you should at least make a 700 on the exam. That or your teachers are too easy on you.

Yeah, I actually got a 600 something and I am a failure at math in general.

hasuchObe, calc has nothing to do with most of the questions thats appear on SAT math.

The material on the SAT Math is easy, however they have a really bad curve.....u get like 5 ques wrong and immediately a 680.....lol.......

And no........SAT does not measure engineering potential.....All it measures is how well you are familiar with "the SAT".........I don't think it indicates anything....it's just something colleges use so that they don't have as difficult of a time choosing who to accept and who to reject...
