I went there for a year + grad school. Its better than Chicago, but barely. They are probably the two most similar schools out there. Just as Dartmouth is amazing to transfers for some very subtle reasons (the general public is not aware of this), Columbia is horrible. 80% of first years live in first-year dorms, so you miss out on that experience. The cafeteria is similarly first years only, so can't meet people that way. The bars are absolutely hit or miss and most leave on the weekends into the city. The library is quiet so can't meet people that way. You get the picture...

Its a good school but I would say the best weekend on campus at Columbia was worse than the worst weekend at Dartmouth socially. Sure Columbia has some cool events (Bacchanal concerts), but it pales in comparison to Penn, Dartmouth, and Brown. Its a great place to be in grad school, not so great to transfer into for college.

well, Columbia despite all of ur negative comments is my first choice by far

u can see why, after being at cornell....i want the city life very much

my top 4 choices

Columbia
Penn
Brown
Duke

then...
U of Chicago
Rice
Northwestern

City life is overrated, bball87.

I totally agree, 90% chance you'll have the city after you graduate. you only get college once. Meyer, any more questions? Seriously I know all of these schools pretty well.

"If these were Roman times, New York City would be Rome itself."
good choice bball. i wouldn't leave cornell for any of the others.

slipper, what do you know about spring semester v. fall semester for B? I put spring as my first choice.

meyer, where did u get into as a freshman, just chicago>

Its an easier admit Meyer but if I were you I'd ask for Fall. Much better integration and you'll at least get to meet the incoming first year class. Not even close, if i were you I''d rethink that decision.

"City life is overrated"

Maybe for you, but for me it made a huge difference when choosing which colleges to apply to. I can't imagine living in the suburbs for 4 years. I visited my friends at UVa, a school I was really considering, and loved the people and the whole environment, but I need more than what that sort of school environment provides.

i dont know why anyone would indicate the spring for brown, u indicate the fall as ur first choice, and if they don't have room for u, they put u in for the spring semester

Yup, I agree. Spring semester is really the lesser choice by a significant margin.

1 for me is Chicago.

Different schools apply to different people. Not all schools are equal. Choose the school that match your personality and interests. Don't settle for a school that doesn't have what you're looking for. I certainly hope to get into one of the following schools I've applied to:

Stanford
Yale
Brown
Cornell

Not sure which of the schools will accept me. It could either be one of them or none. Just preying for the best because that's all I have to work with.
