Who is Columbia REALLY for?

I know that Columbia of course has good academics, and if you go there,, you are bound to be intelligent. But as far as the social scene, what type of person would make the best fit for Columbia?

Also, I know there is a lot of diversity, so would someone who isn't very open to diversity feel out of place there?

Thanks in advance!

Columbia is in the heart of New York City. Of course, there’s diversity–on campus, and all around campus. If you’re not open to it go to some Mid-West college because Columbia REALLY isn’t for you.

If you hate black people then you won’t fit in.

Other than being prejudice, there’s almost no one that I’ve met so far at the pre-frosh meetings that rubs me wrong. I’ve found very friendly faces and future friends at each and every meetup. you will always find friends on campus if you try, there are just too many types of people on campus for you to be alone. The only way you won’t make friends is if you try to hide.

You’re about 40 years too late if you didn’t want diversity at Columbia. Please don’t come to my school.

…What the deuce?

I don’t quite know what this means but if diversity is not your thing I wouldn’t be considering * any * NYC (or liberal) college period. Dudes kissing, interracial couples, those blacks you see on the news, Jews, Latinos, Asians, Red Sox fans etc. that’s the everyday scenery here. You may not be familiar or at complete ease with them but you ** absolutely ** do need to be open to them.

Yes there are WASPic conservatives, and lots of white christian folks, but they’re generally extremely well integrated with the rest of the ‘‘diverse folks’’ so if you feel you’ll have a problem socializing in those conditions, I’d be tempted to answer your question with a |not you|.

But I guess ultimately the choice comes with what you want to do with your current views. I know some people here with very conservative backgrounds who chose Columbia specifically for exposure to this diversity; to learn and grow from the immersion and whatnot. The fact that you’re “not open” to it makes me think you would ultimately be unhappy here and wouldn’t really help make the school a better place.

…It can apparently lead to some[/URL">http://www.wikicu.com/2007_bias_incidents"]some unpleasantness[/URL">http://www.wikicu.com/Ruggles_vandalization_incident"]unpleasantness.

mrk642

I would simply suggest that you need to be open to diversification. It’s no longer WASP anymore.

hahahahahaha…TROLLL…hahahaha

Mrk642, If you go to Columbia you are bound to be intellegent? What a dumb statement. Intellegence is the biggest factor in gaining admission to Columbia.

Ha, I knew at the beginning that this part would cause the most debate. and that people would neglect to address the other questions (at least not as comprehensively).

If you’re interested in a serious answer, go to the Helpful Columbia Threads thread and scroll down to where I link the “Columbia vs Princeton ED” thread or thereabouts. My opinions in post #5 are pretty applicable to your question.

“If you hate black people then you won’t fit in”

^^ this made me laugh

Hipsters. Scene kids.

If bleeding-heart liberalism makes you queasy, stay far away from New York City.

“I would simply suggest that you need to be open to diversification.”

The erosion of distinct cultures and traditions, or open-mindedness to those that are different from your own?

“Yes there are WASPic conservatives”
“It’s no longer WASP anymore.”

WASP is an acronym that stands for “White Anglo-Saxon Protestant.” Please modify and use appropriately.

Little known fact, Columbia used to be a WASP. :P

^you mean before Hispanics and Asians immigrated to America and when Blacks weren’t allowed to go to school?

1) Jews
2) Hipsters
3) Rich Internationals

haha you remind me of Stewie.

And seriously? If you’re not looking for diversity then why are you even looking at Ivy schools?

TheNewHans, If you really believe the ivys are diverse then you’re in for a rude surprise. Things arent all that it seems on the surface.

i heard the english department is top notch so thats why id like to attend.

House of London, on what do you base that? Aren’t you a '14-er?

I know this post is super late, but I just rediscovered this thread. When I asked about diversity, I wasn’t saying that I am against diversity, or racist, as you all have made it out to be. I was simply asking a question. And I am not a WASP. I am Catholic, actually, and I am accepting of all other religions, although I may not agree with their teachings.
