The information we just received from the school of engineering describes the types of questions (Algebra Trig) and lists a link on the Vandy website with practice problems. Go to: http://atlas.math.vanderbilt.edu/~pscrooke/calculus/calculus.html

Also, this is conflicting information, but the engineering brochure said that the School of Engineering does NOT require freshmen to take placement tests. (They recommend a placement test in a foreign language if you plan to continue in a foreign language.)

Now that we are all confused as to what is required for engineers, I hope this helps.

slipstream99- I think that wouldbe sufficient.

bandmom- yes, I actually saw that too and wondered. I'm not going to be able to attend the SAOP because of various of reasons. However, when I called the SAOP number, I got a woman who said that the math test is mandatory for engineering students. (conflict)

note- there will be a math test during the fall orientation for those who will be missing SAOP.

Yea...I just read the packet. Hopefully the math placement test means nothing. Haha.

My brother is an electrical engineer major at Vanderbilt. He did not go to the orientation program in June. He never had to take a math placement, he just chose which math class he wanted to take and his AP credit was used.

I can't go, either. Us engineers do not need to take a math placement test.

June 24-25, peabody

ooooookayyyy...Now I'm wonderin whether or not I should take the math placement test that I signed up for. Would it be better to just take it, or just skip it? I just don't know if they will use the results of that test against us or not. So confused. Gosh.

my take on it is taht everyone in engineering has to take cal 155. The placement test only determines whether you need extra help on precal topics perhaps.

My understanding is that engineers who will have AP credit for Calculus can take Math 175 in the fall. They will get credit for Math 155 and shouldn't have to take the math placement test. However, contact the engineering registrar to confirm this depending on your individual situations.

Yea, I e-mailed them about it and this is the response I got:

Dear Incoming Vanderbilt Engineering Student:

Recent changes to math placement test guidelines have caused some confusion. No matter what you may have been told in the past, if you think you will take first-semester calculus this fall (e.g., Math 155a or Math 150a), we would like you to take a departmental math placement test during Summer Academic Orientation. That test will be given from 9:30-10:30 am on Tuesday, the first day of Orientation, in Furman 114. Results will be available to you and your adviser by Tuesday afternoon. The test will cover algebra and trigonometry and will help us place you in the calculus course that's right for you. There will be no fee for this test. (If you have already signed up for the math test, the fee will be refunded to you.) This has nothing to do with the SAT II math test, which is not required by the School of Engineering.

If you would like to get a sense of our placement test, visit http://www.math.vanderbilt.edu/~pscrooke/calculus/calculus.html That site contains review materials, exercises, and two practice tests.

If you are pretty sure you'll score 4 or 5 on the Calculus AB or BC Advanced Placement test, you will not need to take this Vanderbilt placement exam.

To add this test to your orientation plans, please send an email to saop@vanderbilt.edu. If you elect not to take the test at SAOP, you will be required to take it during Fall Orientation.

I apologize for the confusion and look forward to meeting you. If you have questions about this, please call me at toll-free 1-877-676-9111.

Please note that in order to register for fall classes at SAOP you will need your Vanderbilt VUnet ID and your e-password.

thank you for that!

is it true that we can't use calculators? their website says:
Will I need a calculator for the math test? If yes, what kind?

No calculators will be allowed on the exam.
and is the fee for the math test refunded for all students, or just engineering students?

I'm not too sure about that refund, but I know for sure that we cannot use calculators.
