I was accepted ED and apparently the housing selection process starts April 1. I would really appreciate some input about which houses on the commons are the best/have the best Heads of Houses etc. Really any details about any of the specific houses would be awesome...

I would also like to know about this. I haven't logged in to look at the form yet, so not sure what it looks like. Are we supposed to rank the houses or something? I thought it was always just random...

Also, I know the Ingram head of house asked the students in class of '12 to sign a promise stating that they wouldn't drink alcohol? There was some controversy over this, right? ahah are the other heads of house like this too?

you dont get to pick your house. there is really no point in knowing that stuff before you apply for housing.

That's funny ZPlayer, I was dating a freshman that lived in Ingram and never heard about that. Sounds like it wasn't really a controversy at all, probably just another way isolated Vandy faculty got to embarrass themselves.

Edit: Should probably clarify that. We have a great administration and faculty; check that, phenomenal administration and faculty, except when it comes to their recent calling to try to change Vanderbilt's culture from a fun-loving work hard, play hard type school to one that is less so. In these cases, they continue to excel at embarrassing themselves with silly "reforms" and "pledges" that are extremely successful at accomplishing nothing except possibly appeasing people who are wary of coming to such a school (an example is the banning of probably an average of one important fraternity a year from campus only to beg them to come back on after said fraternities enjoy their lives without IFC regulations off campus).

just googled this quickly

I guess I should stop believing everything I read and wait till i'm on campus...ha.

How big are the rooms? Do the houses have common rooms or recreational rooms?

It doesn’t really give you too much about the rooms. I actually talked to a Vandy student, and it’s really a luck of the draw of what you get. Some are great, some are terrible (in terms of size). Then you also share the bathrooms with a large amount of people. Not to mention that it doesn’t seem to get nicer as you become an upperclassmen. It all kind of turned me off…

When are the peak bathroom hours, does anyone know? I’m usually showering and whatnot at either ~7 PM or 5 AM, should I expect to see many people in at that time?

kasiiaaa: I just toured the campus earlier today and can honestly say that the dorm I saw (in Ingram) was one of the larger dorms that I’ve seen on a college campus. The best feature of the dorm I saw was the very high ceilings in the rooms, nice carpet floors, and large closet space.

The dorms here were definitely some of the better rooms that I’ve seen on college campuses.

When my son was a freshman, he lived in a dorm that is now for upperclassmen, I guess, since the Commons was opened. While he did share shower facilities, his room (2 occupants) shared a small bathroom with one other room (also 2 occupants). The bathroom was located in between the two rooms, a door on each side. I got the impression that was how the whole dorm was set up.

There are some housing options for sophomores, including the living/learning lodges, that are not set up like standard dorms.

I think WashU’s dorms trump Vandy’s though…haha.

Sorry, I don’t mean to sound like I’m bashing Vandy, just still trying to make a decision.

it depends what house on the commons you get. i’m an RA and i’m in Crawford which is one of the newer ones, so the rooms are well-sized for two people. BUT, there are some houses (like the “historic houses” which are actually the older, renovated ones) that may have smaller rooms.

are there singles in the commons?

Yes; I have a friend in West Hall who has a single.

thanks!

before the commons it seems that you could request singles or doubles. Do they still do that, and if so are you likely to get your choice? or is it totally random

I don’t know if you can still request a single, but there are very, very few singles on the commons (I’d say less than 15).

are there triples up for grabs?

usually the triples are forced, they just kind of happened. i think the “surprise” of a triple was sprung on some people here when the freshman got onto campus, but the rooms are HUGE

Is it possible to request two roommates and a triple?
