Who is sick of these inane Yale vs. Harvard threads?

Raise your hand!

Are Yale's sidewalks less slippery than Harvard's during the winter?

Yale's steam tunnels keep the flagstone walkways clear of ice. But I heard that the fluorescent light buzz decibels is greater in New Haven than in Cambridge. Oh well. I guess I cross Yale off the list! LOL

I'd raise my hand but I'm laughing right now.

haha!!

I am curious why it is always Yale v. Harvard and not Yale v. Princeton or Yale v. Stanford. Do Yale and Harvard overlap that much in what they excel in or their campus life? It seems like there is some unnatural rivalry or unconscious urge for people to suddenly compare the two without considering other tier 1 schools such as Princeton, Stanford, MIT etc.

do you think that this rivalry stems from their football game? or did the football game rivalry come from the rivalry itself?

No yale vs. stanford because of the new england thing and Ivy league, I'm guessing. Yale vs. princeton.. well, I think people just like talking about Harvard (aka 'top' school, according to popular reputation) And whereas yale is known more for liberal arts and princeton for math/science, Harvard seems to be in the middle. So I guess it would make more sense to compare yale to harvard than yale to princeton. Anyway, I agree that these threads are ridiculous, and the kind of arguments posters are using are laughable too....

Yale vs. Harvard is the oldest collegiate rivalry in the United States. Yale was founded because people thought the folks at Harvard were heretics. Harvard is the oldest college in the US and Yale is the 3rd oldest, so given the nature of Yale's founding, there has been a rivalry between them since 1701. I think the first official sporting event between two colleges was a Yale/Harvard crew regatta, so it's the oldest sports rivalry in the US.

Stanford wasn't founded until 1891 and it's in a different athletic conference, so there isn't the historical rivalry. Although Princeton was founded in 1746 and is in the same athletic conference, Yale and Harvard were already rivals by the time it was founded. While I would not personally denigrate Princeton in such a fashion, I think that for a long time (19th and early 20th century) in the public imagination it came it third to Yale and Harvard in terms of prestige, reinforcing Yale vs. Harvard as the ultimate rivalry.

well yale won in gilmore girls.

Better Motto: Harvard vs. Yale <--- guess Yale wins there- not only do they have truth, but light, too (;

The parodies are endless.

It’s basically a competition between great school v. great school. You can’t really lose with either of the two!

If I got into one of these schools, I would take the acceptance letter and run with it. So what if you like the dorms at (insert college name)? You got into (insert other college’s name)!

I’m a sophomore in high school, and I would love to get into either.

I find the threads very amusing. They’re so full of people spouting either arbitrary and irrelevant statistics or passing entirely subjective opinions off as objective that I can’t help but giggle when reading them. Same goes for Ivy vs Oxbridge.

Why start up a thread from THREE years ago, WHY?

If any old thread is still timely, it’s this one.

I find the Harvard vs. Yale threads extremely funny!
I remember someone posting about which one had a better mascot. Harvard was apparently better since it’s a colour and hence everywhere. Someone replied saying that the Yale bulldog could pee on a Crimson carpet so there wasn’t even a competition! The world is a more amusing place because of the Harvard vs. Yale rivalry. (And because of the way MIT interferes in the football games to play pranks)

The ‘Harvard Pep Squad’ that made 1800 Crimson fans openly declare-“We suck” for the 2004 Harvard-Yale game was in my opinion the best prank ever.

No. The best was when the Harvard side pretended to be JFK and his security detail and Yale fell for it!

I concur with the op, these threads confuse me entirely. I mean they are both renowned schools, and I don’t think that I have ever encountered a thread where there are solid arguments and they reach a final conclusion on which school is better
