I'm starting to think that when I get accepted into college, I will defer for a year to join the peace corps - for at least 6 months and then work and travel in another country for another 6 months. Then I will go back to school - then off to med school!

I think, (and I might be wrong) but CC might be the wrong place to look for people who plan on doing that…

Yeah, there’s plenty of other similar organizations you can volunteer for, but not peace corps. Peace corps is for after college and it’s a 2 year program from what i know.

Mairoula is right- the peace corp has strict regulations- it’s a minimum 2 year program (although you can leave early by choice/ if the site is shut down due to danger reasons), and if you want to be accepted into the program, you’ll most likely need a college degree.

To top it off, they want you to apply generally around a year before you plan to leave.

Deferring for one year isn’t quite going to cut it. My suggestion: wait until after college if you really want to do this.

moviefreak126–that sounds so cool! In fact I’m sort of in a gap year now, volunteering in China (teaching English and History) while taking Spanish lessons. I think it’s a great way to relax and do things that I really want to do (like learning Tai-chi and Street Dance). After four years of college I guess I’ll go straight into a job and then, there won’t be too much free time. If you decide on a gap year, I hope you can plan well and enjoy!

If you do the Peace Corps, it is something to do after college. They want you to have some education. It is near a two year stint. Plus they will pay off some of your Perkins Loans (if you qualify) if you are in it long enough.

Try Americorps. Or teach. Research and you’ll be surprised as to what you’ll find.

I’d love to do peace corps, but I won’t be 18..I am definetely planning a year or two off after college before I start work/go to grad school though..so hopefully I can go then!

If I defer a year it will only be due to the white house internship ;).

That doesn’t affect your admission in any way right?
