who knows the history of "Don't tell until the 10th"

I know there are some people around that know why most schools don't have rolling admission.

Why did most schools agree to keep quiet until the March 10th day?

Can you tell I haven't been sleeping well--lol...lots of time to just think about this wait.

My d asked me not to mention bs until the 10th, and only because I let her stay home that day.

Although I don’t have an official source for this I always assumed it was because March 10th is right around the time prep schools let out for spring break. Schools would traditionally send the letters out the Friday before break so that they would arrive when school was out of session. That would cut down on the frantic calls to the admissions office when letters didn’t arrive as quickly as expected or when the letters that did arrive contained bad news. By the time the two weeks of vacation had elapsed most of the sturm und drang had faded.

I guess it was a mutual agreement, I’m kinda killing myself 2

i wish my mom would let me stay home from school on the tenth : (

Except bookluver07 that many schools MAIL on the 10th so you won’t know until the 11th or after depending on where you live… :)

I’m thinking of leaving that decision up to my son. If he has any good news in the morning, he’ll probably go on to school. If the early online decisions are not happy, I’ll let him stay home if he wants to.

Maybe March 10 gives them just enough time to complete the admissions process (ie. sealing envelopes, deciding who gets in, figuring financial aid)

My mom said I could stay home if I wanted but I don’t wish to. Want to distract myself, although if I get a negative decision at 6am I might just roll back into bed. Neato, last year at what time did Groton put online decisions up?

If I remember correctly, not a minute sooner than whatever time they said they would. All I remember for sure was that it was after noon and before 3:00. International students got theirs sooner.

I’d much rather have rolling admissions, so you could just send in your app and get your decision in a few weeks, with a lot less drama. But idk, there must be some reason as to why they wait until a certain date…

the schools need to make up a cohesive class. They are not just accepting individuals, they are making up a whole, and sometimes they need to see a big picture before they accept people

most tiers of schools have the same pool of applicants - a specified admission date makes it fair to every school and every applicant

Great post mhmm. Schools are looking to create a whole class so that in the end you have a diverse (globally and economically) class structure in which to participate in. That big picture takes time to fine tune.

And remember how many applications they get – all that paperwork has to be reviewed and discussed and reviewed and discussed again. That takes lots of time.

true, true, truee

I would just want to sit in on the admissions office debating over an applicant. That would be so cool to me.

we shouldddd.
