Rolling admission?!?!?! (confused)

When you are accepted really early (like in November, Dec. Jan. Feb), do the schools ask you to make the decision in a few weeks, or do they allow you to wait until after March 10 to decide when you have all your acceptance/rejection etc.??

I know of no boarding/prep schools ( maybe other than local day parochial schools) that let you know of acceptances before 10 March.
Rolling admissions means that applications to the school will be accepted past the desired deadlines (generally) between mid January (FA candidates) -early February.
Smaller schools sometimes have beds to fill and will have room for a spring and summer applicant - usually (not always) a full pay candidate.
If admitted, April 10 is the date that you send the schools a deposit for the following fall for the regular admission cycle.
Generally after April 10th the schools go to their waitlist or entertain the idea of looking at rolling admission students.

liddy, that’s not what rolling admissions means. Most schools who list their admissions policy as rolling mean that you can apply and they will read your application accordingly, and give a decision when they are finished (before March 10). Some schools (on BSR) say that they’re deadline is Feb 1 / Rolling, meaning that they prefer to have applications before February 1 and you should apply then if you’re asking for FA, but they will continue to accept applications after this date.

It can be both - you are correct.

Even if you look at Peterson’s they discuss both kinds of rolling admissions - the type where each app is decided on a case by case basis (and you know about 4-8 weeks afterwards) or a school that gathers apps for a period of time but still lets everybody know at once - usually 10 March. I only dealt with non-rolling admission schools with kid #1, but with kid #2 we are looking at smaller schools. I am sure I will see the nuances in their app process as compared with the schools I am more familiar with. The day school near us (Berwick) and the 2 large parochials also wait until 10 March even though they also are rolling.

My brother was accepted at Eaglebrook which does roll in admission…they told him their decision within about a week after he finished the app and then gave him and my parents 2 weeks to decide…i think…it might have been a month but i think that’s cuz my parents asked for an extension
