Who said the Pac-10 is a weak conference?

^ No doubt it is. Colorado and Texas would've been Pac-10 members, but the 'furd prez said NO.

Stanford, Cal, UCLA, USC, and Washington give the Pac-10 "academic patina".

^^^Because it is

I think colorado is the best academically out of utah, byu, co, and csu

I wonder why Stanford didn't object in 1978 when Arizona State joined the conference.

Of course maybe it's good that they didn't, at least for this year. ASU is the only remaining conference member who has a shot at the national championship.

Northwest:
Washington
Washington State
Oregon
Oregon State
Cal
Stanford

Southwest:
USC
UCLA
Colorado
Utah
Arizona
ASU

That one seems like the best!

The only problem with this division is convincing Cal and Stanford to break into a separate division from their So Cal rivals.

I agree. Cal's 2nd biggest rival (after Stanford) is clearly UCLA. The notion of them not playing each other every year does not sound optimal.

I would actually argue that their next biggest rival (at least recently) has been SC. Either way, you have a good point.

I was also thinking in terms of basketball, where large conferences imply that some teams don't play home-and-away games against all other conference members.

That is, unless we were proposing a football-only expansion to the Pac-10.

Too bad it won't be happening now.

NO EXPANSION OF THE PAC-10!

Thanks for posting up those articles UCBChemEGrad. I especially like this quote:

"The academic leaders at USC, Stanford, Cal and UCLA see themselves as a coterie of Ivy League schools, West Coast division, and as long as they live, the Pac-10 will not be taking on lowbrow academic entities, not San Diego State and especially not Fresno State or UNLV."

Call me an elitist, but I agree with that. The Pac-10 runs the west coast in athletics AND academics. Adding more schools to it would take away some of the prestige.

UCBChemEGrad----AWESOMENESS!!!!!!!!!

Arizona State or USC???

predictions?

i'm going with USC, i just think they're a deeper team who knows they still have a lot to play for.

same here...but more so that I "want" them to win then they're better..I need hope for Oregon...

startraksfinest,

BYU and Utah have academically stronger student body than bottom half of Pac-10 schools (WSU, UO, OSU, UA, ASU; BYU and Wash are about the same). So instead of thinking about the ones in CA or NV, maybe they can try the ones in Utah.

"The academic leaders at USC, Stanford, Cal and UCLA see themselves as a coterie of Ivy League schools, West Coast division, and as long as they live, the Pac-10 will not be taking on lowbrow academic entities, not San Diego State and especially not Fresno State or UNLV."

But USC, Cal, and UCLA aren't bothered with "lowbrow acadmeic entities" on their teams; they can't, or they won't be able to compete with other major conferences. It looks just a bit ironic to me.

YES!!!!!!!!! USC is doing it. USC 44, Arizona St. 24

woooohoooooo..Oregon has a chance at the Rose Bowl if we win out..yessirreee

lol, i knew you'd be happy. good luck, i'm pullin for uo.

CAL GETS OWNED AT TENNIS by STANFORD AND UCLA!

I'm done... 5th and 6th string QB????? This sucks!
