Most selective colleges require either the ACT or SAT + 2 Subject tests. However, there are many exceptions, for instance, some schools require Subject tests from everyone, whether they submit the ACT or SAT. You need to check the websites of schools to check their testing policies. Some colleges have additional requirements for certain majors/schools, eg. Engineering.

If a student is taking an AP class, that is a good opportunity to take the corresponding Subject test in the spring as well. AP tests are generally more comprehensive than Subject tests, so relatively little, if any, additional preparation is necessary beyond what is done for the AP.

Agreed, but you do not have to take the AP to take an SAT Subject Matter test. It is a good idea, to get one of the many study guides and practice the test format. You will easily identify the areas you need to bone up on and you will get the timing of the test down. Best of luck!
