who thinks it doesn't pay off to be a jock in the end?

Two football players from my d high school could not play college football because they were small....one is a freshman at Yale and the other is a freshman at Brown....

Stop generalizing, it's pointless.

Jocks aren't stupid. There is actually some intelligence that is involved in swinging a bat or kicking a ball. Varsity sports are serious commitments that take up all your time, and there is definitely a lot of blood, sweat, and tears put into every season.

If I were a admissions officer, I'd much rather take a so called "jock" as opposed to some skinny, pimply-faced, glasses wearing, nerd with a lisp and a pocket protector that does homework all day in the basement. There, how's that for generalizing? :)

"High school jock = no grades no ec's = no good university."

Thats the dumbest thing i've ever heard. Im a two sport varsity athlete (recruited in track.. and thats sprints not long distance)and a member of both Deca and Student Council. Me and most of my other jock friends have already been admitted to some great schools. Being a "jock" is an amazing ec if your varsity b/c it shows amazing commitment and jocks tend to be the ones that have the most fun in college and the least trouble making friends. I just switched schools and being a jock helped me make friends easily b/c people kept coming to me asking me if i was going to a play a sport. Being a jock helps you make great friends w/ ppl with similar interests. I've also noticed that teachers (at least at my school .. but sports are pretty big here) tend to make jokes w/ and talk to jocks more.

High school jock = no grades no ec's = no good university.

anyone else think this way?

joethemole, i think its safe to say that no one else on this thread feels that way.

WHAT is a jock? is it someone who plays sports? maybe plays a season or two a year? is that a jock? well, then no, not all jocks are dumb.

is a jock white, muscular, american corn bred, popular with cheerleaders, cliquey, likes to drink/party alot... then yes, those jocks are dumb.

Well, let me tell you this. I was never a "jock", nor was I considered a "geek" or anything else of that nature. I drove my life in my own way, and people respected me for that. I was a man with no label at all and it paid off. Now I'm having a terrible time at college, but at least I got in one without taking any APs.

As for what I did--I was heavily involved in the IT Department. That is, I was one of the guys who ran the network and was the only student in that capacity. Never played a school sport (but did play baseball outside of school). I was also in the band, but more or less to produce the video. Wasn't too shabby of a trombonist either. My big claim to fame there in the end wasn't the musical part, but being someone the freshmen could come to if the other upperclassmen gave them problems.

All in all I'd say I was satisfied with my jock-free life in high school...

I'm probably considered a "jock".

I think the sports I've been involved with have been some of the most positive experiances for me in high school.

Yet I'm also the captain of my schools robotics team, science bowl team, a 3 year all state band member, and have taken every AP avaliable while remaining at the very top of my class.

I play soccer for my school, and played tennis as well... but I know so many idiots who play sports, like it's their life (which is what I think the OP was getting at). And sure there's the possibility of their athleticism getting them recruited, but most of these guys won't be recruited. The truth is, it all really depends on the person, because some people are jocks to be jocks (aka it makes them popular) and others do it because they like the sport. So this operates on a case to case basis (obviously).

I don't think jocks are necessarily unintelligent... there are obviously a few good students, etc. in there.

However, I do agree with the idea that it doesn't pay to be a jock who spends their weekends at their exclusive football parties and looks down upon anyone who ISN'T a jock, and is just overall a meathead.

But, obviously, not all jocks are like that.

Not at all! One of my best friends is number #1 in our conference (#4 in state) in his weight for wrestling and has been offered a full ride to MIT. Yup-average student.

Jocks...it;s like saying all nerds can't play sports. Stop stereotyping man, most are nearly all vague generalizxations made with little to no evidence.
