who thinks it doesn't pay off to be a jock in the end?

High school jock = no grades no ec's = no good university.

anyone else think this way?

no, cuz then ur characterizing all jocks as dumb. some have good grades, good ec's, and are the captains of varsity sports teams, all of which help them get into a good university. Some are brilliant enough to not study and still ace tests, so they can afford to party and hang out more often.

And besides, even if u are a dumb jock u may still have the athletic talents to be recruited by a good university. Also, many jocks have leadership and people skills, which may take them as far or father than people who just possess intelligence.

If you're just going to be a Boobie Miles, then no, being a jock is not worth it. One unlucky injury and your life's over, and you're no better off than a high school dropout.

However, most jocks are reasonably intelligent, although perhaps not very knowledgeable. With time, the gifts that made them good athletes can be translated into other fields, and they may become quite successful. Plus, because of all the praise they got in their teen years, they may not have inferiority complexes like some nerds may have.

We can also expand the definition of "jock" to include anyone who is really really good at something, as Harry Bauld sort of does, but I don't think that's what the OP was getting at.

"High school jock = no grades no ec's = no good university."

That's completely wrong. Most of the 'jocks' that I know have stellar grades, great EC's, and can give any 'non-jock' a run for his or her money. :)

My HS was very much a "jock" school - over 60% of kids played or participated in sports. However, they were all pretty smart, too, and our school tended to be more flexible than most in working around sports schedules, which was good.

I think that the discipline we all got from sports carried over to academics, not to mention the great health benefits of playing sports.

lol some jocks are so funny
this guy who's a really good football player .. the other day he got his transcript and was like "MAN this sucks i got a freakin 2.0, thats like rank 82 out of 80"
hahahah
he was serious too.

High school jock = no grades no ec's = no good university.

how ignorant

As much as I tend to be envious of their athletic abilities and social skills, jocks are freakin awesome people. And what is the big deal about not going to a so called good university? Just because it is not meant for you doesn't mean others do not appreciate any form of education they can be provided with. Snobbery ceases to amaze me.

oh yeah
a jock's main hook could be their athletics
so how is it that they have no ec's lollz
most jocks are good at several sports, & i think that's a pretty good EC right there

I can't believe I'm hearing this. Completely ridiculous.

Playing sports can help tremendously in time management.

Is this some sort of sick "revenge of the nerds?"

I play sports, am ranked in the top 1% of my class, and have plenty good ecs and test scores.

This gross mischaracterization reveals the extent of your envy and jealously.

At my school, the jocks are some of the most smartest and most involved out there. That's a gross over-generalization to characterize every jock out there.

One of my good friends in High School had one of the highest GPA's in my class (I think he was in the top 25, out of 650 students) and had a leadership position in both student government and NHS. He likewise played offensive line for our football. Just because your a "jock" does not mean you're dumb.

How can a jock have no ECs? Athletics IS an EC. In fact in terms of getting an admissions boost, being a recruited athlete is the very best EC one can have.

And many athletes also have excellent grades too. Every year I attend the Footlocker high school cross country national championships. They bring in the 64 best cross country athletes in the entire US (32 boys and 32 girls). Before the beginning of each race they introduce each athlete over the PA system and read out both their athletic and academic honors. I'm always amazed at what high academic achievers these "jocks" are. Being on the honor roll is routine for them, and being class val or sal or National Merit scholars is very common. Those "jocks" all end up going to excellent universities.

"However, most jocks are reasonably intelligent"

No, not really. Not all jocks are dumbasses but to say they are reasonably intelligent is wrong. Most jocks are of average intelligence however some are very intelligent is more accurate.

I know a few nerdy jocks.....

"Every year I attend the Footlocker high school cross country national championships."

But then again xc tends to attract smart athletes, even at the elite level. (seriously, according the NCAA, DI XC runners have the highest GPAs of all collegiate varisty athletes). BTW, coureur, by attend to you mean "run in" as in "qualify for." If so, who are you? Maybe I've heard of you (I run XC myself, though I'm not Footlocker Nationals-fast). But I absolutely agree that athletes are far from being necessarily stupid. I would argue that the percentage of athletes who are intelligent is equal to that in the greater population, but since jocks are already a small subset of the population, the smart jock is fairly rare. The rarity of the smart jock makes people assume that all jocks are dumb, which is obviously not the case.

Thanks for the kind thought, but by "attend" I mean attend as a spectator. The closest claim I have to glory in the running world is that I was born the same year as Steve Prefontaine.

Hey, I'm a jock

Wait...wait...

How are we defining "jock"?

The guys that ride horses right? Jock = short for jockey??
