just curious to see if people would retake a score range from 770-790 for an 800. my physics subject test score should be around from 770-800 and if i dont get an 800 im wondering if i would retake it or not. would you???

770 = 58/75 raw score, whereas an 800 = 66-75/75

If you scored a 800, nobody would know whether you aced the exam or answered 7 questions incorrectly. However, a 770 can be interpreted as you answering 14 questions incorrectly.

It's only a one hour exam. You could retake if you were absolutely sure you would score an 800 on it. But, a 770 is an excellent score, even in Physics.

I would not recommend it.

I would never waste my time.

I honestly think that 700+ is fine for admissions purposes

depends if you were applying to math/science type of school. Schools will know that you got a lot wrong and probably wouldn't like that. Like for example if by chance i got a 790 on Math 2 because i made a lot of stupid mistakes i would feel dumb because it was due to carelessness, so I would retake because I knew a 800 was in my reach I would be capable ....(wait what was i saying?? ... whatever)

so basically I guess I would

If I got a score over 770, I would not retake it

On the contrary, meadow36, I have heard reports of admissions officers frowning on students retaking subject tests which are >700.

Honestly, if you would feel "dumb" by receiving a 790 on the Math Level II test, you seriously need:

A reality check.

Intravenous injections of self-esteem.

definitely not...

such a waste of time and money.

Definitely not. A 770-790 is just as good as an 800 :).

Well, I fall under the ecentric range I guess.
I retook my Math IIC 770 hopefully for an 800. But I'm looking at MIT so I wanted a better math score.

It's not necessarily that bad in practice to retake it if you're have free spots when you're taking another subject test.

It would bother me, but I don't think I would. I would just take more so that when the admissions committee see it would show 2/3 800s.

If you apply to MIT, then a 800 in Math II would be much more desired... but that's honestly the only exception i can think of.

MIT specifically states that prospective students shouldn't retake if they score higher than 700... it's really up to you...

if you were really that set on getting an 800 you should've prepared properly the first time around.. retaking if you have a score over 750 is frowned upon and shows that you are obsessed with making the perfect score. elite universities hope that you take the tests to demonstrate your talent and to show your interest in that academic field, not interest in the prestige of getting an 800...

If I were an AdCom, I would look poorly on those who retake their tests when they get higher than a 770...I would much rather accept the student that doesn't try to game the system and looks a lot more confident and less worried about grades and so forth.

If it's MIT, I'd retake all the math/science ones to get an 800, although if I got a 790 on one, I probably wouldn't

well with this new development (that you can hide unfavorable SAT scores beginning for class of 10) I think that if you really think you can get an 800, you may as well try as long as you're comfortable spending the time and money.

but i still wouldn't do it.

got a 790 on chem.

not retaking.

When did this happen?

And I agree... I think Math II is the only one to CONSIDER retaking a 770.

I agree with aigiqinf. The only subject I'd retake in the 700+ range is Math II.
